    Super Bowl 1
    The First AFL-NFL World Championship Game was played in Los Angeles on January 15, 1967. Despite its horribly long name, this game “remains a thrilling benchmark for fans not only because it was, in fact, the very first Super Bowl, but because of the jaw-dropping number of future Hall of Famers — and gridiron legends who never made it to Canton — who played, coached or were simply associated in one way or another with the event.” The Packers ended up defeating the Chief’s 35-10.
  • Bushfires in Tasmania

    Bushfires in Tasmania
    On February 7, 1967 bush fires tore through Tasmania, spreading to both sides of the River Derwent. The fires were driven by high temperatures and winds over 60mph. They claimed the lives of 62 people and caused $11 million in damage. It is referred to as “Black Tuesday”.

    Amendment 25 to the Constitution
    On February 10, 1967 the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. This describes the procedure in case of presidential disability and the procedure for succession. This plan has frequently been necessary, on eight separate occasions, a President has died in office and several other times, the President has either resigned from or been removed from office. Similarly, on seven occasions, the Vice President has died in office and one Vice President resigned in the middle of his term.

    The Boing 737 made it’s maiden flight on April 9, 1967. It was one of the first short-haul commercial airplanes to have the turbine engines mounted under the wings and it was the first to be cleared for operation by only 2 pilots. It served NASA as a platform for many new technologies.

    Between April 28 and October 29, 1967, the “Man and His World” world fair took place in Montreal, Canada. The fair was originally intended to be held in Moscow, to help the Soviet Union celebrate the Russian Revolution's 50th anniversary; however, for various reasons (security & costs), the Soviets decided to cancel, and Canada was awarded it in late 1962 and it couldn’t have been better. The expo helped celebrate Canada as a nation’s 100th birthday.

    6 Day War
    The 6 day war (June 5-10, 1967) was caused by rising tension with the threat of nuclear war and Egypt massing troops near Israel's border on May 15. By the end of the war, Israel had conquered enough territory to more than triple the size of the area it controlled, from 8,000 to 26,000 square miles. The victory enabled Israel to unify Jerusalem. Israeli forces had also captured the Sinai, Golan Heights, Gaza Strip and West Bank.

    The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 went into effect in October of ’67. This treaty prohibits the stationing of weapons in outer space with the capability of mass destruction along with military activities on celestial bodies (planets), and details legally binding rules governing the peaceful exploration and use of space. This is a treaty like any other so there can be amendments made and member withdrawals.

  • First DNA Synthesised in Test Tube

    First DNA Synthesised in Test Tube
    Arthur Kornberg, Professor and Executive Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Stanford University replicated the DNA chain of the Phi X174 virus on Dec. 14, 1967. Eventually he isolated the enzyme that unites the building blocks into DNA. According to Kornberg people over exaggerated the accomplishment, they saw it as if it was Dolly the cloned sheep.
