1960 SUPERCOMPUTER ATLAS The purpose of the project is to have memory space for up to a million 48-bit words
In early 1960s Tom Kilburn executed the supercomputer ATLAS. This is an operating system which switch data between magnetic core and drum in the form of pages. It was the first computer to employ a technique known as virtual memory which requires slower external memory. Instead of vacuum tubes Atlas was created using discrete germanium transistors.
