DEC PDP-1 introduced
The PDP-1 computer system has a cathode ray tube graphic display, paper tape input/output. It does not requires air conditioning and only needs one person to operate. This has become the standard for minicomputers. -
IBM 7030 (“Stretch”) completed
Model 7030, which made by IBM, was completed in 1961 and was mainly sold to national laboratories and major scientific users. This is IBM's first series of computers that were used transistors. It played an important role in developing later IBM computers. -
MIT LINC introduced
LINC is an early example of a 'personal computer'. It was designed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory engineer Wesley Clark. They were used for biomedical research. -
CDC 6600 supercomputer introduced
Created by Control Data Corporation (CDC), the CDC 6600 is the fastest supercomputer in 1964, about three times faster than its closest competitor, the IBM 7030 supercomputer. It used 10 small computers to offload the workload from the central processor. -
IBM announces System/360
System/360 was sold to both business and scientific customers. IBM started the transition from discrete transistors to integrated circuits. and its major source of revenue began to move from punched card equipment to electronic computer systems.
