The Election
The presidential race is won by John F. Kennedy, the Democratic candidate from Massachusetts, over Vice President Richard M. Nixon. Kennedy won in the popular vote, by a little more than 120,000 votes, but won in the Electoral College tally, 303 to 219. -
Kennedy's Assassination
In Dallas, Texas, President John F. Kennedy is shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn into office later that day.
