Military- Cuban exiles trained by US forces, invaded the Bay of Pigs in Cuba hoping to overthrow Castro. Easily, beaten, many rebels died or were captured to later be exchanged for food and medicine from the United States. -
First escapes from Alcatraz
Social- Clarence and John Anglin along with Frank Morris, were the first prisoners in Alcatraz to escape without being caught. After several months of making fake dummies and cutting through the vent wall, they were able to escape on an inflatable raft. -
First Walmart Opens
Social- Sam Walton opened the first Walmart Discount City store in Rogers, Arkansas. This was the beginning of an era because it reached 12.6 million dollars in sales within the next five years. -
Kennedy was assassinated
Political- The 35th President John F. Kennedy was assassinated riding in a motorcade in downtown Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was caught as the murderer, but was then killed before he had his trial. -
Beatles become popular in US
Social- The british band the Beatles made its way over to the United States to perform for the very first time. Shortly after they took the nation by storm creating hit after hit. -
Combat Troops in Vietnam
Military- The first US combat troops were sent into Vietnam along with 3500 marines to defend the American air base Da Nang. -
Watts Riots / Rebellion
Political- A police officer arrested an African American driver in Watts neighborhood. Due to suspicion of racism local blacks jumped in. Thirty-four people ended up dying and over 3,000 arrested. Nearly $40 million dollars worth of property was damaged. -
First Super Bowl Packers vs. Chiefs
Social- Bart Starr the quarterback of the Packers was too much to handle eventually, going on to win the Superbowl MVP after winning the game, 35-10. Packers scored 21 unanswered in the 2nd half securing an expected victory. -

Technological- The Advance Research Projects Agency Network is the precursor to the Internet. It was the backbone of how the Internet was created. -
Apollo 11
Technological- Apollo 11 was the first spacecraft to successfully land on the moon. Americans Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were on that spacecraft.
