    Benjamin Mays
    Benjamin Mays was an early protester against segregation. In the 1930's, Mays met with Mahatma Gandhi, and learned the ways of non-violent protest. He was a mentor to Martin Luther King, Jr. at Morehouse college.

    End of the White Primary
    It was determined that the Democratic White Primary went against th 14th amendment. This amendment told about equal protection under the law for all citizens. The White Primary ended because of its unconstitutional nature.

    Eugene Talmadge was elected governor in 1946, but before he took office, he passed away. This fiasco left 3 people stating that they were the governor: Ellis Arnall, who was the incumbent, Melvin E. Thompson, the Lieutenant Governor, and Herman Talmadge, Eugene Talmadge's son.

    This was a huge victory for the NAACP and African-Americans all throughout the nation. On this day, segregated schools were ruled unconstitutional.

    Many Georgians were very upset with integration of schools and rights for black people. To show their disagreement, the flag of the Confederacy was added to Georgia's flag in 1956.

    The Sibley Commission
    This commission was formed to see what people in Georgia overall thought about integraton. The leader was John Sibley, a Georgian banker.

    SNCC
    The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committe was a group formed to gain equal rights for African-Americans. they performesd large amounts of sit-ins and nonviolent protests, hence the name.

    These two were the first students admitted to the university of Georgia. This was the start of Georgia integration, and was a huge milestone for African-Americans, because they were finally receiving equal education.

    This was a movent that was ment to help end segregation. However, it did not work. Many people were arrested by the police that day. their main fault was that they were protesting to end all segregation, instead of starting smaller.

    Martin Luther King, Jr.
    Like his mentor Benjamin Mays, Martin Luther King, Jr. was a very strong believer in nonviolence. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a very well educated pastor and a civil rights activist. In 1963 he addressed the very well known "I have a dream" speech. In 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assasinated in Memphis, Tennessee.     March on Washington
    This is where Dr.King gave the very well known speech, "I have a dream". On this day, over a quarter of a million people, black and hite alike, gathered and insisted that there be equal rights for black people. This was a key factor in the governments decision to create a Civil Rights Act.

    Civil Rights Act
    This act ended public segregation in all of the United States. No employment descrimination was allowed, based on one's sex or race. In June, the bill was passed in the Senate.

    Election of Lester Maddox
    Lester Maddox is generally kown for being a very racist person. In fact, in the early 60's, he closed his resaurant just so he wouldn't have to follow the rules of the Civil Rights Act. Despite his racist image, Maddox actually played a key role in hiring blacks for jobs in the government.

    Maynard Jackson as Mayor
    Maynard Jackson became the first mayor of a large southern city (Atlanta) in 1973. Jackson studied at Morehouse college in Atlanta, just as Martin Luther King, Jr. had. In 2003, when Maynard Jackson passed away, Atlanta's airport was renamed Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Airport Name Changes

    Andrew Young Elected Mayor of Atlanta
    Early in his career, Young worked to end segregation in the south. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1972, and in 1977 was appointed as America's U.N. representative.
