Rosa Parks
The 1950s had a huge influence on the 1960s Civil Rights movement. The one woman who had a major influence was Rosa Parks. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was a woman who sat in the front of a bus, was asked to move to the back, and refused the command. After getting thrown in jail, Martin Luther King Jr. came to visit her. Here the two decided to finally do something about the discrimination and stand up. -
Federal Highway Act
In 1956, Dwight Eisenhower had a bill go through congress. The bill was to have a system of Super Highways built all across the United States. The highways would not be open to the public though. They would be used to have military equipment and troops shipped across America if there was a national disaster. -

Castro and Cuba
Using guerilla warfare on August 13, 1959, Castro successfully overthrew the Cuban leader Batista. Shortly after accomplishing this, he was sworn into Cuba as the Prime Minister. As the Cuban Prime Minister Castro’s government established covert military and economic relations with the Soviet Union. These relations would lead to the Cuban Missile Crisis. -
Washington March
On August 28th, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. led a march in Washington D.C. for Civil Rights. The protest had more than 250,000 people show up to support the march. It was the largest demonstration ever seen in the nation’s capital, and the first to be covered on television. -
JFK Assianation
On November 22, 1963 the young president of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was assonated. John F. Kennedy was shot while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas at 12:30PM. JFK was then pronounced dead at 1:00PM. At 2:00PM a man named Lee Harvey Oswald, a former marine and defector for the Soviet Union was arrested for the death of John F. Kennedy. -
My Lai Massacre
In the year of 1968, the war in Vietnam was at its climax. One of the events during the Vietnam War that sent America into a frenzy was the My Lai Massacre. On March 16th, the 11th brigade marched into My Lai and massacred women, children, and elderly men of the town leaving no survivors. Word of the massacre didn’t reach the public back in the states till the next year. -
Man on the Moon
During the Cold War the United States and the USSR were competing for who were the best. With the USSR being the first into space, the United States had to find a way to beat that. So on July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 took Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, Michael Collins up into space. The United States was the first country in the world that put a man on the moon. -

On May 4, 1976 members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State University demonstrators. This event killed four and wounded nine students from Kent State University. This event was so dramatic is caused a nationwide student strike that caused hundreds of colleges and universities to shut down. -

The first attempt on Pope John Paul II was in 1981, May 13. The assassin, Mehmet Ali Agca, shot the pope four times causing severe blood loss to the pope. Agca was caught right after and was taken to prison. The Pope visited Agca in prison and forgave him. Later on the pope requested that the President of Italy Pardon the man. -
Crack Cocaine
Starting in 1984, crack it the streets and didn’t stop or slow down. This drug was coming up through Miami from the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. In major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, or Philadelphia crack was sold as low as 2.50 for one dosage unit. -
Challenger
On January 28, 1986 7 crew members started to make a journey into space in the Challenger. Unfortunately 73 seconds into the flight, the O-ring in the right rocket booster failed at takeoff causing the ship to explode in the air. This catastrophe led to the death of all seven crew members. The remains of the ship were found in the Atlantic Ocean a short time later. -

Rodney King
On, March 3, 1991, Rodney King was out driving on parole. While driving, he was going over 100 mph. When the police turned on the lights, King got nervous. He started running away from them. After a 10 minute chase, King finally decided to stop. Once he stopped and got out of the car, the police started beating King. This event started many racial riots in LA. The case was taken to court twice where King only won one of the cases. -
Oklahoma City Bombing
On April 19, 1995, a bomb, from a domestic terrorist attack on Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, was set off. The bomb claimed 168 people’s lives, including 19 children under the age of 6. 680 more people were injured. This would be the most destructive act of terrorism in America until 9/11. -

On July 5, 1996, scientists successfully cloned the first mammal, a sheep named Dolly. The scientists used nuclear transfer to complete the process. -

The Beltway sniper attacks were a series of coordinated shootings that took place during three weeks in October 2002 in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. -
Virginia Tech Massacre
On April 16, 2007, Seung -Hui Cho, who was a senior at the college, went on a shooting rampage and killed 32 people and wounded 17 more. Cho ended up killing himself before getting apprehended by the police officers. This shooting was the worst act of mass murder of a college since the Syracuse University school shooting which lost 35 people. -
Miracle on the Hudson
On January 15, 2009, the Airbus A320-214 flying to Charlotte from New York hit a flock of Canadian Geese during its climb out. Shortly after they hit the geese, the plane lost engine power and started into a rapid decent. The pilot had to land the aircraft in the Hudson river in order to save the passengers aboard. -

Deepwater Horizon oil spill happened on April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico.The oil spill happened because of a pipe line bursted. With all the damage in the gulf it will not be the same for the next 20 years. This oil spill killed 11 people and alot of animals. -
Osama Bin Laden
May 2, 2011 at 1:00AM in Pakastan, Osama Bin Liden was killed but the Navy seal group, SEAL team Six. After a couple of times making sure Osama was dead. The seals took them with them and buried him in the North Arabian Sea. -
Aurora Shooting
A mass shooting occured on July 20, 2012 inside Century Movie Theatre in Aurora, Colorado, during the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. This shooting killed 12 people and injuried 58. -
Newtown Shooting
On December 14, 2012 a 20 year old man named Adam Lanza went into Sandy Hook elementary school killing 26 people such as students and teachers. This was the second biggest mass killing in elementary school history.
