Communist North Korea invaded South Korea across the 38th parallel. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War.By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself.

Nixon Resigns
President Richard Nixon resigns from office to avoid impeachment. This was after admitting to the watergate scandal, in which his administration often "bugged" offices of his political opponents and launched illegal investigations of activists and social groups. He was later pardoned by his successor, president Gerald R. Ford. This was the first time in history when a U.S. president resigned from office.

The Viking 1 spaceprobe became the first spacecraft to land successfully on Mars and perform its mission. It took some of the first color photos of Mars. At one point, it held the world record for the longest Mars Surface mission of 2,307 days -
Failed Assasination of Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinkely Jr. as an assasination attempt while leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel. Hinkely's motivation was to impress actress Jodie Foster. President Reagan survived with a gunshot wound to the chest and Hinkely was proven not guilty by reason of insanity.

Creation of "Windows" computer software
The first version of Windows was named "Windows 1.0." It ran graphical programs designed for Windows and was developed by Bill Gates. It worked with Apple to develop the first MacIntosh computer, the first computer to be mass produced. -
Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble Space Telescope was the first major optical telescope to be sent out into space. It has been used to observe a variety of stars and galaxies light years away from the Earth. Since it's start in 1990, it has made 1.3 million observations. In addition, more than 14,000 papers have been published including data collected by the telescope.
