1942-1953: A Time of Wars

  • The Holocaust

    Jews all over Europe were taken captive and forced into concentration camps, where they were tortured and killed by the Nazis.
  • The GI Bill

    The GI Bill was passed in 1944. It was designed to offer benefits to returning veterans of war. The Bill provided a chance at a secondary education and encouraged home ownership.
  • The Invasion of Normandy

    The Western Allies performed the largest invasion in history. They invaded France With over 150,000 soldiers, the Allies attacked and gained a victory. This invasion became the turning point for WW2. This invasion is also known as D-Day.
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    The U.S. dropped two atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two cities in Japan.
  • WW2 Ends

    The second World War ended when Japan surrendered in 1945.
  • NATO

    NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was formed as a defense pact between the U.S., Canada, England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. This was intended to stop future world wars and stop communism from spreading.
  • The Cold War Begins

    The Cold War was the rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States. The conflict began after WWII when the Soviet Union and other countries wanted to promote communism, and the United States wanted to end it. The creation of NATO helped prevent the Cold War from becoming an actual war.
  • The Korean War Begins

    War broke out between North Korea and South Korea, when North Korea invaded South Korea after some incidents along the border.
  • Eisenhower Becomes President

    Dwight D. Eisenhower won a landslide victory over Adlai Stevenson. This ended a string of Democratic Party wins that went back to 1932.
  • The Korean War Ends

    The Korean War ended with a treaty. The agreement created the Korean Demilitarized Zone to separate North and South Korea. This is still enforced.
