Lorraine's health issues
Lorraine was a heavy smoker her entire life, she later was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1963. As the saying goes, the show must go on, and Hansberry worked on the play even as her illness progressed. It opened on Broadway on October 15, 1964.
