Pluto was discovered by an assistant at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Pluto was considered to be the ninth planet in our solar system for over seven decades. -
The U.S. Officially Gets The National Anthem
President Hoover signed an act saying that "The Star Spangled Banner" was the national anthem. Before this, we did not have one. The anthem was written by Francis Scott Key. -

When it opened, the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world. It stood at 1,250 feet tall. -
Lindbergh's Baby Kidnapped
Charlie Lindbergh Jr., son of Charles Lindbergh, was put to bed. When the nurse went in to check on him, she found he was kidnapped. A truck driver later found the remains of the baby about five miles from the family's home. Bruno Richard Hauptmann was charged with the murder and executed. -
Adolf Hitler Appointed Chancellor of Germany
Hitler was appointed by President Paul Von Hindenburg in an attempt to keep him and the Nazis "in check." THis later turned out to be disastrous for, not only Germany, but all of the European continent. -
Assassination Attempt on FDR
After giving a speech in Miami, Florida, Giuseppe Zangara emptied his gun in an attempt to kill the president. None of the bullets hit FDR, but one mortally wounded Chicago's mayor and four other people received minor injuries. -
First Nazi Concentration Camp Created
The first concentration camp was Dachau (named after city where it is located). Its original creation was to hold political prisoners. It eventually grew to hold a diverse population of people that were targeted by the Nazis. It was the model concentration camp where new SS guards went to train. -
Bonnie and Clyde Killed by the Police
Bonnie and Clyde went on a two year crime spree during the Great Depression. They were responsible for 13 murders as a result of many robberies. They were brought down in a police ambush of bullets. -
Frank Lloyd Wright Designs Fallingwater
Fallingwater was designed as a nature retreat for the Kaufmann family. It is located in Pennsylvania and sits over a waterfall. The waterfall is part of Bear Run. When Mr. Kaufmann first saw Wright's design over the falls, he was dissapointed. He wanted the house built on the southern bank facing directly at the falls. -
Hoover Dam Completed
Constructed to prevent flooding and provide irrigation and hydroelectric power to the arid region. It was originally known as the Boulder Dam, but was renamed later in honor of Herbert Hoover for his important role in getting the dam built. -
Nazi Olympics
Many countries had planned to boycott the Olympics because of Adolf Hitler. They ended up putting their differences aside and sent athletes to compete. this was the first year to see the Olympic torch relay. -
The Hindenburg Disaster
While attempting to land at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey, a tiny flame sparked and caused the whole zeppelin to combust. Within 34 seconds the whole thing was consumed by fire. -
Amelia Earhart Disappears
The aircraft carrying Earhart and her navigator went missing in the Pacific Ocean. The U.S. Coast Guard had sporadic radio contact with the plane as it approached Howland Island. The messages said that they were lost and running low on fuel. Nothing has been found from the plane or either person. -
World War II Begins
The war started with Germany attacking Poland. It was mostly between the Axis Powers (NaziGermany, Italy, Japan) and the Allies (France, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, the United States). WWII was the largest and bloodiest war in world history. -
The Night of Broken Glass
SS Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels announced a government-sactioned pogrom against Jews. Mobs of people went around beat, arrested, and murdered Jews. They also ransacked and burned Jewish-owned stores. Officials only stepped in if non-Jewish homes and businesses were threatened. This is considered to be the beginning of the Holocaust.
