    Diphtheria Outbreak
A physician and four nurses faced a deadly outbreak of diphtheria during the winter that could kill a majority of its 10,000 residents. The cure, antitoxin, that Dr. Welch had was expired and not usable so he sent for a delivery. Governor Scott Bone approved a series of mail carrier mushers to deliver the medicine. The trip that would have normally taken 20 days was completed in just 5 days and 7 hours. Two weeks later the antitoxin was given and the quarantine was lifted.
