The stock market began a long traumatic fall. The week before, the market had undergone a similar crash before temporarily stabilizing. Citizens were still scared and began withdrawing their funds. The stock market crash led to credit vanishing. The beginning step toward the Great Depression. -
Manchuria Railroad Explosion
Japanese-owned South Manchuria Railway was near the city of Shenyang in China. In 1931, part of the railroad exploded in what the Japanese claimed was an attack by the anti-Japanese dissidents. The explosion was found to be actually planned by the Japanese. -
Roosevelt Promised New Deal
Franklin D. Roosevelt promised a "New Deal" for the American public. It became the overarching name for the many programs which Roosevelt would enact to help end the Great Depression. This campaign helped Roosevelt win election against Hoover. -
Pearl Harbor Attack
The Japanese launch surprise attack on the American Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The attack took thousands of American lives and several vessels.
