  • First sucessful test of Insulin on Humans

    After several years of study, a team of scientists led by Professor Frederick Banting successfully tested their new medical drug, insulin, on Leonard Thompson, a 14 year old diabetic boy who was near death. It was successful. He rapidly regained his strength and appetite as a result.

    Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming discovered that if Penicillium Rubens were grown in a certain way, it would exude chemicals with antibiotic properties. Significance: Penicillin is one of the most widely used medical drugs in the world. It has saved hundreds of millions of lives since its introduction into the world. Without insulin the world would be a much sicker place.
