1914-1929 A Time of Progress or Decline

  • Franz Ferdinand

june 28, 1914, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. This is what is said to be the reason why world war 1 started. it is said to be the outbreak of world war 1. Franz was heir to the austrian throne and was assassinated by a group by the name of The Black Hand. The austrians blamed the serbians and had 3 demands for serbia that they failed to meet ultimately starting World War 1. i would classify this as a -1 because this is what got Canada brought into war which led to many deaths.
  • Britain Declares war Against Germany

This is the reason Canada was brought into the war. Germany failed to meet the demands of Britain's Prime minister Asquith, Britain declared war. Britain owned 20% of the world at the time and among that 20% canada was there. Since Britain was at war that meant that Canada and all the colonies britain owned was at war as well. This is what changed Canada forever. this is as a -1. My reason being is that if britain did not have rule over Canada, the men who died would still be alive.
  • War Measures Act

The war measures act Gave the Canadian government access to do anything they see fit in the time of war. This was made to protect Canadians but it only did the opposite. This act violated human rights and put "Enemy Aliens" in camps under terrible and terrifying conditions i would classify this as a -1. This is a -1 because Canada made this act and by doing that many people were harmed and put in horrible situations.
  • The Second Battle of ypres

The second battle of ypres was a battle that was long fought and extremely difficult because the germans had an advantage. The Germans had obtained poison gas. Canada did not have as much firepower as the Germans but they still got the victory. This showed Canada's perseverance and strength. i would classify this a +2. This is a +2 because it showed that Canadians soldiers should not be underestimated and that Canadians are strong.
  • The Battle of Vimy Ridge

This was the first battle Canadian soldiers came as a unit in.Canada obtained over 4000 prisoners to bring back to Canada. This battle was extra difficult because of the weather. There was a storm while the two countries were battling which made the condition worse. This was a major time for the Triple Entente. on the downside, over 10,000 Canadian soldiers were killed. i would give this a 0. My reason for that is because even though Canada got the victory, 10,000 soldiers were lost.
  • Canada's one hundred days

Canada's one hundred days is how canada contributed the final 100 days of the war and what Canada did. The Germans launched an attack on the 18th of august 1918, so, the Canadians moved the Germans away from Amiens. Canada continued to save countries from German Captivity. i will classify this as a +2 because Canada did not only win but they also got to learn how to use many artillery.
  • Agnes Macphail

After the war women were seen differently and were beginning to get treated better than before. a woman named Agnes Macphail attempted a seat at the house of commons and succeeded. Even though many people doubted her and did not like her, many people supported her and wanted her to succeed. To be a woman at the time and have a position that she was in made her a big role model and inspiration to women. +2 this is a +2 because this is the starting point in what made women equal to men.
  • The Chanak Affair

once the war had ended, the British were later attacked by the turks. Britain's forces were low and required help so they called upon canada for assistance. Canada was different now so instead of just going along with what the british had asked Prime minister Mackenzie King said that the parliament will decide. The parliament could not decide on time so it was too late. this is a +2 because This is what gave Canada the ability to stand up for itself and be its own country.
  • The roaring 20's

This is after the war and many soldiers moved to the cities in hope of finding jobs. Women had opportunity and freedom when at war and were treated better because they got to prove themselves but once returning home it was a whole different story. Canadian wheat industry had become a hit because many other countries wanted Canada's wheat. this is a +1 because at this time many inventions were created and Canada's trade with wheat was doing very well. but many other people could not find jobs.
  • The persons Case

Canada is now seen as an independent country the war is over, and peace has finally met Canada. One thing was missing, women's rights. Women were finally seen equally and men were to now treat women as they would treat fellow men. The persons case established women as people under Canadian law. The reason for this happening was because of a group named "The Famous Five". this is classified as a +2. the war has ended, women are treated equally, and there is peace.
