    Uprising against foreigners, begun by peasantry but eventually supported by the government. Anti-foreign, anti-colonial, and anti-Christian uprising. Targeted Western missionaries, and Chinese converts to Christianity, who disregarded traditional Chinese ceremonies and family relations.

    Armed rebelling against the ruling of the Qing dynasty. Beginning of the Xinhai Revolution which successfully overthrew China's last imperial dynasty. Led by elements of the New Army, influenced by revolutionary ideas from Tongmenghui.

    Originally existed as a study group working within the confines of the First United Front with the Nationalist Party. Many involved turned to Marxism after the Bolshevik victory in the Russian Revolution in 1917. Within 1920's Chinese turmoil, CCP members began organising labour unions in the cities. Revolutionaries popular within peasantry.

    A period of political repression in China by the Republic of China/Kuomintang government. Title given to episodes of mass violence throughout history, carried out by conservative or nationalist groups against anarchists, communists, socialists, liberals, revolutionaries etc.
  • Shanghai Massacre

    Violent suppression of the Chinese Communist Party organisations and leftists elements in Shanghai by forces supporting conservative factions in the Kuomintang. It is believed that over 1000 Communists were arrested, some 300 were executed and between 5000-10000 were "killed".

  • The Long March

    The Long March

    A military retreat undertaken by the Red Army of the Chinese Communist Party, to evade the pursuit of the National Army of the Chinese Nationalist Party. Of the 200000 men estimated to have participated, 8000 made it to the final destination, then joined by 32000 men from surrounding areas. In military terms this is was a major defeat.
