Source The jungle by Upton Sinclair revealed the corrupt and unsanitary conditions of the meat packing industry. He exposed how the workers were likely to spread contagious disease through the meat and many meats were purposley mislabled. This led to reform regarding food packing laws. -
The immigration Act
SourceBy 1907 U.S. immigration was at an all time high and people were flooding into the country. The immigration act was passed and required records for all immigrants on ships coming to the country. This along with the other sections of the act made it increasingly harder to enter the country. -
NAACP is Formed
SourceThe NAACP was founded by William English Walling. The NAACP strived for the advancement and rights of colored people. They also faught to get rid of prejudice in the work place. Thanks to movements like the NAACP acts have been passed even recently like the Equal Oppurtunity act that prevents discrimination in the wsork place. -
Triangle Shirtwaste Fire
SourceThe Shirtwaste fire exposed the harsh working enviroments of factories and workshops. The employees werelocked in the building to increase productivity, but when a fire errupted they became caged in. This led to the enactment of safety laws and the increase of the union to be used as a voice of employees. -
First Assembly Line
SourceHenry Ford was the first to implement the assembly line. Ford was looking for a faster way to manufacture his cars. Each person had one job in the line so they would become extremley fast and accurate at their specific part. This changed the operation and efficiency of all factories. -
The Panama Canal Opens
SourceConstruction of the canal started in 1907. President Teddy Roosevelt decided it was time for a change in boat travel from New York to San Fransisco. Before the canal it was manditory to go around South America which was about 12,000 miles. This also increased trade with other countries. -
First Radio Ad
SourceThe first radio advertisment was for Hawthorne Court Apartments in Jackson Heights. Although the ad was only for apartments it changed the way companies would promote their products forever. -
Equal Rights Amendment is Presented
SourceEqual right was first presented to congress by Alice Paul in 1923. Paul was the founder of the National Womens Party and played a large part in the movement. Although the amendment wasnt passed until later Paul played a large part in it. Thanks to the ERA women are able to vote and are more recently becoming closer to equal to men in the workplace. -
Stock Market Crash
SourceIn 1929 the stock market fell to an all time low. As a result many people were worried about their money that was in the banks. Everyone tried to take their money out at once andthe banks could not provide it. This changed the structure of the banks so they were more secure. -
World War II Begins
SourceWorld War II began at a time when our economy was recently recovering from the economical crash. However because there were so many troops drafted to the war many many women were forced to join the work place working with metals and in factories. This was a large gateway for women to start working more.
