Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
A devastating fire kills 146 workers and injures 71 at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. The doors of the factory were chained shut to prevent employees from taking unauthorized breaks (the managers who held the keys saved themselves). -

Beginning as a result of the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand, WWI starts off with Austria declaring war on Serbia, and then later Austria and Germany. Americans' desire to go to war is stoked by the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. -

The construction of the Panama Canal is finished with an estimated final cost of $350 million dollars - making it the most expensive project done in the United States. -

The Hunt for Pancho Villa
Pancho Villa and his supporters attack American interests and raid the town of Columbus, NM, on March, 1916, killing over a dozen soldiers and civilians. Wilson orders an expedition of several thousand soldiers led by Gen. John J. “Blackjack” Pershing to enter Mexico and capture Villa. Villa eludes Pershing for nearly a year and, in 1917, with war in Europe looming and great injury done to U.S.-Mexican relations, Pershing leaves Mexico. -
The 19th Amendment
The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, is ratified by Congress, granting women the right to vote. -
Warren G. Harding Inaugurated
Warren G. Harding is elected the 29th president of the United States.
