Wayne Wheeler
Wayne Wheeler was born in 1869. He later joined the Anti Saloon League after getting his law degree. He had helped the league gain control of Ohio's legislature. They had apposed 70 legislators of both parties. His main goal was to make a law where people who lived in an area could vote if they wanted alcohol to be banned or not. He quickly gained so much power that the Anti Saloon League basically controlled American Politics at the time. -
Anti Saloon League
The Anti Saloon League was founded in Ohio in 1893. In 1895 it gained so much traction that it became a national organization. Most of their support came from churches and woman. They lobbied in all government legislation branches to outlaw the manufacture and sale of intoxicating beverages. After the 18th amendment they went to enforce the amendment. -
Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson was the 28th president of the United States. He served 2 terms from 1913-1921. He was written many letters about how alcohol should be banned in the country. Most of these letters were from the Anti Saloon League. He at first did not support Prohibition and he vetoed the Volstead act. But the Senate override his veto. -

Volstead act
The Volstead Act stated that the sale,transportation,and possession of beverages containing 0.5% or greater alcohol by volume. The Volstead Act did make it so Alcohol could be used for medicinal and religious purposes. The Volstead Act also didn't say that the consumption of Alcohol was illegal so people took advantage of these loopholes and still drank alcohol. -
Ratification of the 18th amendment
The 18th amendment was ratified by the states on January,16,1919. It prohibited the "manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors." -
The 18th Amendment
The 18th amendment made it so that the sale and transportation of intoxicating liquors would be illegal. The 18th amendment gained a lot of traction before it was created. Many people wanted prohibition to happen like the Anti Saloon League but most people didn't think it would go so far. Most people thought the intoxicating liquors part of the amendment was just for hard alcohol like booze. But it outlawed anything with alcohol in it. Soon people apposed it because of all the crime happening. -
Al Capone
The 18th amendment made crime skyrocket. Many people would get insanely rich off bootlegging and other crime during this time. The most famous mobster of prohibition is Al Capone. The reason why he was so popular is because he was very public with the people. He would be out in the streets acting like a very nice guy everyone could relate to. But everyone would soon find out how brutal he really was. The feds would try to get evidence on him but they only found that he was tax invading. -
St.Valentine's Day Massacre
Al Capone was a ruthless mobster who wanted full control of Chicago. He wanted all of his rivals dead and would do anything to make it happen. So on Valentine's day in 1929 he allegedly had some of his men dress as cops then had 7 members of Bugs Morgans gang line up onto a wall and they killed them all. Frank Gusenberg had survived for a few minutes but told nothing to the police. This shocked the nation as it proved that violence had gone to far and the 18th Amendment was a total failure. -
Franklin Roosevelt
Franklin Roosevelt became the President of the United states in 1932 he promised the people that he would help them get out of the great depression and he would abolish the 18th amendment. There was now a lot of support to remove the 18th amendment because the people saw how much of a failure it was. And because America is in the great depression people wanted it removed to create more jobs. So in February of 1933 the 21st amendment was created making the 18th amendment no longer have any power. -
The end of the 18th Amendment.
After many years of prohibition, the people were fed up with the 18th amendment. And on December 5th 1933 the 21st Amendment was created. It stated that "The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed. The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or Possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited." -
21st amendment
The 21st amendment stated that everything the 18th amendment said is no longer true. The 21st amendment gained tons of traction mostly from the jump in crime and because of the great depression. People stated that if the 18th amendment was repealed it would create many jobs and make the economy better. When Franklin Roosevelt was running for president he said that he would repeal the 18th amendment. He won and he made the 21st amendment stating that the 18th amendment would be repealed.
