  • Battle of Little Big Horn

    In 1874 gold was discovered in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The U.S. pressured the Sioux to sign a new treaty giving control of the Black Hills to the U.S. This caused clashes between the U.S. and the Sioux. In June of 1876 Lieutenant Colonel George Custard led the 7th Cavalry Regiment up a trail to advance on the Sioux, who were camped at an area marked Little Bighorn. However, they were greatly out numbered and Col. Custer and all 268 on his men died.
  • The Compromise of 1877

    Democrats agreed to concede the presidency to Rutherford B. Hays in return for all remaining troops to be pulled out of the south and economic favors. Hays was inaugurated in March and all troops were ordered out in April.

  • The Great Railroad Strike of 1877

    The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 was the first major railroad strike. As a result of the Financial Panic of 1873 northern railroads began cutting pay and hours. Employees responded by blockading and stopping the movement of trains. The strikes only lasted for about a month before they started dying out. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 was ultimately a failure but it did show workers of their need group together.

    Chester A. Arthur is sworn in after former president Garfield dies from gun shot wounds. He is official inaugurates on September 21st becoming the 21st president of the United States.

  • National Strike

    In the summer of 1886 labor unions worked toward the goal of an eight-hour day. This cry resulted in a national strike on May 1, 1886.
  • Dawes General Allotment Act

    Passed by Congress the Dawes General Allotment Act broke Indian reservations into individual family homesteads. Families were given 160 acres, single individuals over 18 years old were given 80 acres, and orphaned children were given 40. They were given four years to choose their sections and at the end of the four years no chose had been made then an agent was appointed to make the selections for the remaining memebers.

    The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was passed in an attempt to stop companies from forming monopolies or trust.
  • Frontier Thesis

    At the World's Columbia Exposition in Chicago Fredrick Jackson Turner presented his frontier thesis. Turner's thesis stated that the frontier is what gave america its democratic spirit.

    Grover Cleveland is inaugurated for a second time becoming the 24th president of the United States.
  • William McKinley inaugurated

    William McKinley is inaugurated becoming the 25th president of the United States.
  • Sinking of the battleship Maine

    The battleship Maine sank in the port of Havana. Media reports point to Spain. This became a rallying cry for Americans who already wanted to go to war with Spain over Cuban independence.
  • Spain declares war

    Congress declared that Cuba independent which gave McKinley the power to kick Spain out. McKinley declared a blockade around Cuba. As a result, Spain declared war starting the Spanish-American War.

    Tension between the United States and Spain had been building prior to both countries declaring war due to Cuba wanting independence from Spain. Once the battleship Maine sank in the Havana port accusations that Spain sank it began. President McKinley ordered a blockade of Cuba and days later both countries declared war.

    The Treaty of Paris is signed ending the Spanish-American War.

    Along with the Treaty of Paris ending the Spanish-American War America gave Spain $20 million for the Philippine Islands. Instead of giving the Filipinos their independence America occupied the Island for three years. This also began the Philippine-American War

    At the end of the Spanish-American War America gave Spain $20 million for the Philippine Islands. Instead of giving them their freedom, America would occupy the islands for three years which would be know as the Philippine - American War.
  • Open Door Policy

    Secretary of State John Hay issued the first open door notes to Britain, France, Japan, and Russia. The Open Door Policy was started was a way to insure equal access to Chinese markets.
  • William McKinley is reelected

    William McKinley is reelected defeating William Jennings Bryan. Future President Theodore Roosevelt is selected as Vice President.
