Law passed that a slave would equal 3/5 of a person
In 1787, a law passed that a slave would equal 3/5 of a person. This was fair to slaves. They wanted to be accounted as a whole. -
The Louisianna purchase
President Thomas Jefferson approved the Louisianna purchase in 1803. It was still a young nation but it was still growing. -
The Missouri Compromise
Missiouri state costitution wouuld allow slavery. There would be 12 slave states and 11 free states. If Missiouri became a state the balance of the U.S. Congress would lean towards the South and slavery. -
Missouri was aloud to enter the U.S.
When Missouri entered the U.S., they were not a free state. Missouri thought they should enter the U.S. as a slave state and to allow slaves into their state. -
Fugitive slave law
Congress passed the Fugitive slave law. Northern officials would have to help Southerners capture Fugitive slaves. Some of the slaves had to travel to Canada before they felt they were free from slavery forever. -
The Kansas Nebraska Act.
The compromise of 1850 was passed in September. Many people in both parts of the U.S.were more upset than ever before. Southerners thought the North was trying to destroy slavery. -
Underground Railroad
In 1854 the Underground Railroad was created. It was used as for runaway slaves to get to Canada. Also it was not underground. "Conductors" helped slaves get suppiles when needed. -
Main became a free state
In 1859, Maine became a free state.The number of free and slave states would remain equal.How ever, some southeners were concerned that northeners might one day change the way they lived. -
James Brown attemped to free slaves
In 1859, James Brown lead a revlot to free slaves. Therefor, he was caught. Soon, he was hung. -
Abraham Lincoln was elected.
In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected for president. Northerners and Southerners felt how the election might affect the nation -

In 1861, war began against South Carolina. The South attacked the North at Fort Sumter. -
