  • Missouri Compromise

    Any state above the -36/30 line would become a free state and any state below became a slave state. Also they admitted Maine as a free state and Missouri became a slave state. Info from: History.com
  • Compromise of 1850

    California became a free state and in return the south could get back any fugitive slaves in the north. Another agreement was that the population from any western territory vote on being a free or slave state while applying for statehood. Info from: Georgiainfo.com
  • Battle of Antietam

    It is known as the bloodiest single day battle in the war. The winner of the battle was inconclusive, but the North claimed the victory because they pushed the South's forces from Maryland. Plus it gave Lincoln the victory he needed to initiate the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Emancipation Proclomation

    Abraham Lincoln made an executive decision to declare that every slave become legally free. The emancipation only actually applied to the states in the confederacy. Not to mention he issued it twice, but the south didn't yield. Info from: Civilwar.org

    It allowed new freedmen and poor whites to have a chance to work for money/land, but usually they would just get themselves into debt. Sherman actually kind of started it with loaning newly freedmen 40 acres of land from the land he pillaged on his march.

    It countered all the rights that was given to the blacks, and basically restricted them of their freedom.In South Carolina, a law didn't allow blacks from holding any occupation other than farmer or servant unless they paid an annual tax of $10 - $100.
