  • Bloody Kansas

    Bloody Kansas
    Many people weren't happy about the changes to slavery and the federal government outlawing slavery in Kansas this would lead to not just political violence but many citizens fighting each other over this. Hence the name Bloody Kansas.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin
    This is a book written by abolitionist Harriet B. Stowe, and it was a retelling of the life of a slave, the book would be very influential in convincing the North that slavery was even worse than they thought.
  • Republican Party

    Republican Party
    Also known as the Grand Old Party, they opposed slavery expansion, supported the bank, supported the transcontinental railroad, and wanted to Industrialize.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    This would be an act passed by Congress and it would outlaw slavery north of the 30-60 line, it would also form the new states, and have an effect on popular sovereignty.
  • Election of 1856

    Democrat James Buchanan would win over Republican John C. Fremont. In this election, you could notice that all the southern states voted for Buchanan and most of the Northern states voted for Fremont.
  • Brooke-Sumner Incident

    Brooke-Sumner Incident
    This is the incident where two days after Sumner had given a speech opposing slavery Brooks was not very happy with Sumner. Especially because Sumner Attacked Brooke, so Brooke beat Sumner with a gold cane.
  • Le Compton Constitution

    This would be a constitution constructed for the state of Kansas it was written by pro-slavery advocates and would create higher tensions between the North and South. In the end, this constitution would be shot down.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott
    Dred Scott was a slave, who had attempted to sue his owner, based on the fact that he was in a free territory so he was considered a free man. This would end up going to the Supreme court and brought up the question of popular sovereignty and in the end, was shot down.
  • House Divided Speech

    This would be a speech given by Abraham Lincoln to the Illinois Republican Convention, where he would say that this conflict will not end until we can end this division and allow for both sides to be on the same page not half and half.

    This would be a series of debates between Republican Abraham Lincoln and Democrat Stephan A. Douglas. Most Debates were over the issue of the spread of slavery. These debates were very significant because despite Lincoln's loss these debates would help to make a name for Lincoln setting him up to win the elections in the near future.

    This is when a group of abolitionists led by John Brown made an attack on a federal armory near Harper Ferry, this would make tensions worse and be the event that would cause the Civil War.

    John Brown
    He was a very religious man who was also more than likely insane, he believed that he was an instrument of god and that he was on this earth to get rid of slavery. His greatest moment of intelligence would be when he raided Harpers Ferry and was caught and executed for treason.
  • Secession

    There would be 11 slave states that would secede from the country after Lincoln was elected. This was because of the fear of Lincoln getting in the way of slavery.
  • Election of 1860

    This is the election where Republican Abraham Lincoln would win, the most significant thing to notice about this election would be the largely noticeable divide between the North and South. The Southern states all voted Southern Democrat and the Nothern states were mostly between Republican and Northern Democrat but mainly Republican.
  • Lincoln First Inaugural Address

    This would be a speech that would be considered one of the Greatest in US history. This was a speech that hit home with many people through his use of many bible references and through his use of god to really push this speech to his audience. In the speech, he declared that his plan was to outlaw slavery and that he was going to stand firm and enforce these laws.
