  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Harriet Beecher Stowe issued Uncle Tom's Cabin as a book in March 1852. For the first year, the book sold 300,000 copies and about 2 million worldwide by 1857. Uncle Tom's Cabin increased the tension between the Abolitionist and Anti-Abolitionist debates.
  • Republic Party

    Republic Party
    Former members of the Whig Party created the Republican party against the spread of slavery. The Republican Party gained many followers in the North, in 1856 their first presidential candidate was John C. Fremont. The Southern Slave states threatened they would leave if the Republicans won the presidency. In November 1860, Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, won the presidency. As time went on Southern states left the union, thus beginning the Civil war in April 1861.

    The Kansas Nebraska Act repealed Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty. It also produced the violent uprising known as "Bleeding Kansas."

  • Brooks-Summer incident

    Brooks-Summer incident
    Southern Congressman, Preston Brooks beats Northern Senator, Charles Sumner, with a can in the halls of Congress. Brooks had a history of violence and he took it upon himself to defend his kin which was sick and could not attend Sumner's two-day speech. Brooks was viewed as a hero in Southern states, while viewed as chaotic in Northern states.
  • Election of 1856

    The presidential election of 1856 took place during the Kansa's civil war. It was when John C. Fremont ran for presidency but lost the election. It was Buchanan who won 174 electoral college votes to 114 for Fremont. If Fremont gained two more states to vote in his favor he would have been the first Republican to be President.

    A meeting with Pro-slavery, anti-slavery, and president Buchanan to determine if Kansas is going to be a slave state or a free state.
