    Bloody Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas, Bloody Kansas or the Border War was a series of violent political confrontations in the United States between 1854 and 1861 involving anti-slavery "Free-Staters" and pro-slavery "Border Ruffian", or "southern" elements in Kansas
  • Republican Party

    The Republican party opposed slavery so they gain many northerners supporters. Southerners were angry.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Act created the Kansas-Nebraska territories in which created popular sovereignty. Many people did not like this act which created violence between the pro-slavery and antislavery settlers.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    The Lecompton Constitution(Kansas) was written by proslavery supporters. The document permitted slavery, excluded free blacks from living in Kansas, and allowed only male citizens of the United States to vote.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott was a former slave that was a part of the supreme court case: Scott v Sanford. A court case that reinforced the idea of slaves being property.
  • Brooks-Sumner Incident

    After giving a speech, Senator Charles Sumner sat at his desk only to unsuspectingly get beaten with a cane by Preston Brooks. This incident showed how violent tensions over slavery were becoming.
  • House Divided Speech

    A speech given by Abraham Lincoln addressing the slavery issue. In this speech he states that “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” This speech was very influential to both the South and the North.
  • Lincoln Douglass Debates

    The debate was Lincoln vs. Douglas and the topic of slavery was a big issue. Douglass won the debates he divided the democratic party between the northern and southern. Losing support which went to Abraham Lincoln a republican which gave an advantage to the anti-slavery protesters.
  • John Brown

    John brown was a abolitionist that made his first attack in Kansas killing four pro-slavery people in their sleep. After this event he raided Harper's ferry by leading a small group against a federal armory and attempt to armed slaves he failed. Virginia v. John brown was Brown's trial for his previous crimes in Harper's ferry and bloody Kansas. He was found guilty.
  • Harper's Ferry

    The raid in Harper’s Ferry committed by John Brown and his 18 anti-slavery followers lead to tensions between the south and north, the south began to militarize and the north began to experience more action towards freeing of slavery.
  • Election 1860

    This election involved slavery and the candidates were Abraham Lincoln (Republican) who support anti-slavery and Stephen Douglas (democrat) who supported slavery. In the end of the election Lincoln won angering the south.
  • Sessesion

    The southern states wanted to secede the union because Abraham Lincoln now the president wanted to contained slavery after SC seceded other states started to secede to.
  • Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address

    Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address was delivered on Monday, March 4, 1861, as part of his taking of the oath of office for his first term as the sixteenth President of the United States. In this address he said that he would uphold the Constitution and that he would not use force against the South, unless necessary
