It was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It mainly talked about the injustices of slavery. It also worked as an incentive for Northerners to consider ending slavery. -
Republican Party
The Republican party won with Abraham Lincoln in the Election of 1860. Which made Lincoln the first Republican president. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
This created two new territories. It also allowed popular sovereignty for Kansas and Nebraska to become free or a slave states. Because of this, it brought an event called "Bleeding Kansas" which were fights between proslavery and Anti-slavery activists. -

Bloody Kansas
Bloody Kansas is also referred to as Bleeding Kansas or Border war. It was violent outbreaks of Guerrilla warfare between pro-slavery and anti-slavery activists. Kansas was a new territory open for Popular Sovereignty. Both Pro and Anti slaves forces wanted it. It also contributed for the Civil War. -
John Brown Bleeding Kansas
He was a leader of the anti-slavery force. He led raids and freed slaves. This ended up helping him raise money and then planned his raid on Harpers Ferry. -
Brooks-Sumner Incident
This incident was between Charles Sumner, a senator from Massachusetts(Anti-Slavery). Preston Brooks(Pro-Slavery) beat Sumner with a cane since Sumner insulted South Carolina Senator Andrew Butler in his abolitionist speech. -
Dred Scott
Dred Scott was a slave who was more recognized by Scott v Sanford. In this case, it was ruled that Scott even though he resided in a free state he wasn't free. Another decision made was slaves wouldn't be citizens since they are considered property so he couldn't sue in federal court. They also made the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional. -
House Divided Speech
This speech was given by Abraham Lincoln. The purpose of this speech was to make the north realize that if they wanted the U.S. as a Free country they had to act soon. If they didn't they would be late and the Supreme Court would rule out rights to ban Slavery. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
They were a series of debates between Lincoln and Douglas. The importance of these debates was for the election. Douglas was trying to nationalize slavery. Douglas introduced that Slavery could be excluded from a territory if officials did not pass laws to protect it. Which cost Douglas to lose the south. -
LeCompton Constitution
It was a proslavery document. This Constitution would allow slavery in Kansas. Protected slaveholding and removed free colored people from its bill of rights. It got rejected and Kansas became a free state in 1861 -
Harper's Ferry
John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry. To initiate a slave revolt in the Southern States and raid the U.S. Armory. It ended with John Brown being accused of treason and later being Executed on December 2nd. -
John Brown Execution
He was hanged in Charles town for treason on his raid on the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry. He justified his action by saying he carried the will of God. He wanted to make slaves revolt and destroy the institution of slavery. -
Election of 1860
The Election of 1860 had two separate campaigns: one in the north, Lincoln against Douglas. One the south between Breckinridge and Bell. Lincoln won as a Republican, and Breckinridge won as a Southern Democratic. Lincoln won the election. -
Secession
South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union. They thought that the Republican administration would appoint antislavery judges, postmasters, military officers, and other officials. Later on Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas joined South Carolina. (1860-1865) -
Lincoln 1st Inaugural Address
The main point in this speech was his promising not to interfere with the institution of slavery where it existed. He also pledged to suspend the activities of the federal government temporarily in areas of hostility
