1850-1861

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    This was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe during the issue of slavery and she wrote about how slavery was inhumane for the slaves. It offer an interesting perspective and spread knowledge about the reals of slavery, either leading people to anger and further slave support, or to anger and anti slavery support. She was credited with having this book start the division in the country.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    In this act they decided what to do with the states on the lines of slavery. They allowed popular sovereignty to decide what they did in the states for slavery. Stephen Douglas passed this and the repeal of the Missouri compromise leading to further tension of the civil war such as Bloody Kansas.
  • Republican Party

    When the Kansas-Nebraska act was passed all the tension came out and people started arguing a lot more because there was no compromise. The republican party was then born from the Whigs to limit slavery.
  • Bloody Kansas

    This was a bloody fight between the abolitionist and anti abolitionist to convince Nebraska or Kansas to become the kind of state they wanted once popular sovereignty came into play. It was a brutal fight involving John Brown and the states were ripped apart over this issue. Kansas ended up becoming free after this.
  • Brooks-Sumner incident

    A shocking violent act by Congressman Brooks took place in the Senet floor as he approached Sumner and beat him down with a cane. This showed the extremes we had come to as a nation over people political opinions.
  • Election of 1856

    In this the republicans had John Freemont, the democrats James Buchanan, and the Whigs Millard Fillmore. There is much support in the north for Fremont, but Buchanan wins. They argue on the democrat side that the republicans cannot win because they are anti slavery and will cause a civil war.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    This was written as a nullification of the Topeka constitution to change the outlaw of slavery. This was advocating for slaveowners to buy and sell as they pleased and it angered many as they wanted to make Kansas a slave state.
  • Dred Scott

    After moving north with his owner Dred Scott was thinking he could be free once his owner died. When he died they did not free Scott or his family so he took it to court. They said that slaves had no constitutional right, and it made the decision that congress could not determine a state free or slave.
  • House Divided Speech

    This was Lincolns speech to become senator. He lost but after speaking so strongly on slavery he was able to get support to win the presidency. He had the opinion that war had to stop in order to keep the nation united.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    These were debates between Abraham Lincoln as republican and Stephen Douglas as democratic on for Senator. They debated over slavery but Douglas ultimately won on anti abolition.
  • Harper's Ferry

    John Brown raided the United States arsenal at Virginia Harpers Ferry. He did this in intention to bring about a slave revolt with the weapons.
  • John Brown's Death

    After the raid John Brown was sentenced to a hanging. He was charged with murder, treason, and insurrection and died a martyred for the abolition of slavery. In his death he left a note saying that he was sure this war between slavery would end in blood.
  • Election of 1860

    In this election people are not happy with Buchanan because he has not done much to help the issue of slavery. Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Bell, and John Breckinridge all run on different sides of the slavery issue. When Lincoln wins in his opinion to illuminate popular sovereignty and slavery states start to succeed.
  • Sucession

    After Lincolns inauguration many states were upset and wanted to succeed in order to keep slavery. South Carolina was the first to go and six more followed immediately after, then four shortly after that. They were all southern states.
  • Lincoln's 1" inaugural Address

    This was the speech Lincoln gave at his inauguration. He promised to uphold the rights of slaveowners while not allowing expansion of slavery in order too keep peace in the nation. People were not satisfied with this and the civil war followed.
