John Brown was an Abolitionist. He was born on May 19th, 1800, and died on December 2nd, 1859. He led the raid on Harper's ferry. And he was a martyr for the anti-slavery cause. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom´s Cabin is a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, it was published on March 20th, 1852. Stowe, descending from an upper-class white family, wrote about slavery, and how it has negative effects, and it discussed anti-slavery ideas. For many, this novel was an opinion changer, but for others, it made them want to fight for the right of slave ownership. -
Bloody Kansas
We use this term used to describe the time of violence during the settling of the Kansas territory. -
Republican Party
The Anti-Slavery people would meet in Wisconsin and eventually made a new party and it was the Republican Party. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
On May 30, 1854, The Kansas-Nebraska Act was signed. It gave Kansas and Nebraska the ability to vote on whether or not slavery would be legal in their states. -
Brooks-Sumner Incident
Brooks and Sumner got into a heated argument and said lots of mean things and after the two-day speech, Brooks went into Sumner's room and hit him multiple times with a gold-tipped cane for what Sumner said. -
Election 1856
This was an election against James Buchanan (winner), John C. Fremont, and Millard Fillmore. -
LeCompton constitution
This was the 2nd of 4 constitutions that Kansas had to choose from. It was made by pro-slavery people. -
Dred Scott
Scott, a slave with a lifelong owner, fought for his freedom after his owner died and his new owner moved to the North. When Scott´s new owner moved to the North he was not granted freedom as he should have been. Scott went to the Supreme Court where he lost the case. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were seven debates between Lincoln (Republican) and Douglas (Democratic) over being President. -
House-Divided Speech
Lincoln gave this speech and he talked about the Dred Scott decision, US Territory and he said that "a divided house can not stand." -
Harper's Ferry
On October 16th, 1859, John Brown, led a group of men to a U.S. military arsenal. The reason they did this was to start a revolt. Unfortunately, the U.S. marines shut them down within 24 hours. This was one of the last attempts to come to an agreement peacefully, and it raised questions of war. -
Election 1860
Abraham Lincoln, a candidate in the 1860 election, won the popular and electoral vote by a landslide. Lincoln held very strong anti-slavery beliefs, so when he became president the South became very wary of the future. Due to this, they thought the only thing left was war. -
Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address
Lincoln said he wouldn't interfere with the institution of slavery where it existed and said he would suspend the activities of the federal government temporarily in areas of hostility. But, he also took said he was against secession and the seizure of federal property.
