    Harriet Stowe wrote this novel to tell people about the lives of slaves.
  • Bloody Kansas

    This was when Kanas was trying to figure out if they wanted to become a slave state or a free state. Than Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 let the people determine if they wanted slaves or not.
  • Republican Party

    Anti-slavery Whigs are starting in the midwest.
  • Brooks-Sumner incident

    Brooks attacked Chares Summer with a stick in the United States Senate. Summer was beaten really bad.
  • Election 1856

    President Pierce ran for office again, but did not get re-elected and lost to James Buchanan.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott is a slave that went into a free state, so he believed that he was free. He tried to sue the Supreme Court, but it didn't work out. Missouri Compromise was then unconstitutional in deciding which states are slave or free.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    This was Second Constitution for the Kansas Territory, written by pro-slavery reporters. It permitted slavery and only allowed black men to vote.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    The South believed that Lincoln was an abolitionist and believed that territories could be denied slavery protection.
  • House Divided Speech

    This speech was written by Abraham Lincoln in Illinois after he accepted the Illinois Republican Party's nomination as that state's US senator
  • John Brown

    Brown led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry. He was trialed for treason, murder, and slave insurrection. He was the hanged.
  • Election 1860

    Abraham won the election against John Breckinridge and Stephan Douglas.
  • Lincoln's 1" lnaugural Address

    Lincoln said that he would not interfere with the institution of slavery and said that he would suspend the activities of the federal government temporarily in areas of hostility
  • Secession

    The South Secession led to the establishment of the confederacy.
  • Harper's Ferry

    In 1959, John Brown led some men to Harper's Ferry. The men were supposed to take the town's Federal armory and to uprise people against slavery. The reason why John Brown did this was that he believed that slaves should have the right to trial.
