Kansas Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by the U.S. Congress on May 30, 1854. It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´. -

Basically, a slave went into free territory, and thought that he was free now. He tried to sue the Supreme Court, but African Americans aren't citizens. Missouri Compromise was declared unconstitutional in deciding which states are slave or free. -
LeCompton Constitution
Second Constitution for the Kansas Territory, written by pro-slavery reporters. It permitted slavery, excluded free blacks from living in the territory, and only men can vote. -

John Brown's Execution
In 1859, Brown led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry to start a liberation movement among the slaves there. ... He was tried for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia, the murder of five men, and inciting a slave insurrection. He was found guilty on all counts and was hanged. -

In 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the election, and made tensions arise. The secession of the South led to the establishment of the confederacy. Southerners feared with the president that opposed slavery, soon enough the institution would be outlawed as a whole. SOUTH CAROLINA WAS THE FIRST TO SECEDE. -
