Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher, was a book that would give a story which would describe the harsh conditions that slaves went through.The South was obviously against this book and called it an "exaggeration" of slavery. It was an anti-slavery book that would promote the abolishment of slavery. It would "expose" the conditions that slaves would go through and increase the tensions between the North and the South because of it. -
The Republican Party
The Republican Party was a party against the expansion of slavery and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. It mostly consisted of people from the North and barely any from the South. The Democrats, the Souths party, were obviously threatened by this and enraged since the Republican Party was against slavery and they didn't like that. This increased tensions between the two from the moment it was made. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act that would repeal the Missouri Compromise, create two new territories, and allowed the two territories to choose if slavery was prohibited or not. It would cause turmoil in Kansas between the North and the South since the two sides would fight over the territory being for slavery or against slavery. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
The Lincoln-Douglas debates were a debates that would choose between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas to see who would be the next Illinois senator. Stephen Douglas would end up winning, but with the cost of making the South feel betrayed. During the debates slavery Douglas mentioned that territories could refuse to grant legal protection to slavery. This angered the South and caused tensions to increase towards the North. -
Harper's Ferry
Harper's Ferry was John Brown's attempt to freeing enslaved people. He went to Harper's Ferry arsenal and seized weapons in order to arm the slaves, so they could fight against the slave owners. He ended up being stopped before any slaves began to uprise against slavery. Despite it not working, it caused tensions between the North and the South to increase and this could've been the beginning of what led to the Civil War. -
