  • Tariff acts of 1828 and 1832

    1828- was to protect rapidly growing industry in the north. It pushed the duties onto the citizens and were 45% on manufactured goods.
    1832- it brought the percent taxed to 35%
  • South carolina exposition.

    This was written by John C. Calhoun and was in response to the tariff. this claimed that the states had the right to nullify it because it was unconstitutional.

    they declared they had the right to nullify the tariff and any law passed by the government. they were one of the most upset states about the increased price of goods.
  • Jacksons proclamation

    In response to south carolina he said that states do not have the right to nullify a federal law that they believe unconstitutional.
  • Haynes counter

    He claimed that if a state is being oppressed by a law then they can deem the law unconstitutional. He continued to nullify the federal tariffs in response to Jackson sending troops to south Carolina.
  • Force Bill

    This was also in response to south carolina. Jackson issed that federal troops were allowed to use force to enforce any federal law. (The federal tariffs.)
  • South carolina's repeal of the nullification

    Even though they were still angry about the tariff, they convened in response to their ordinance being dismissed. They called for a repeal of the nullification on their tariffs.
