    The Creation of Twitter
    Twitter was created in March of 2009 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, but was not released to the public until July of that year. The following year after twitter burst on the scene, it became one of the leading social media networks, drawing millions of users in months. It quickly gained ground and supposed all other social media sites, eventually gaining significant ground on the social media tycoon, Facebook.
  • The first ever Tweet

    A "tweet" as it is referred to by the CEO Jack Dorsey, is a short message sent out onto the sight, can be no longer than 140 characters, and can only be seen by people who you allow to follow your account. The first ever tweet read "just setting up my twttr"
  • "Favorites"

    "Favorites"
    "Favorites" where the original like button on twitter and were present when the app was launched in 2006, however were replaced years later. The "favorite" as it was referred to, was shown as a golden star on the bottom of a tweet to the right of the retweet button to express someones appreciation or agreeableness to another tweet
  • The @

    The @
    Another Twitter staple, tweeting at people using the @ followed by their twitter handle wasn't introduced until about 4 months after twitter was released. It wasn't even used properly as the connection between the @ symbol and people user names had not yet been created. All it was was a tweet with the @ symbol followed by the persons name, tweeted by Robert Anderson, who is now one of the creative directors at Square.

    After only one year, twitter had attacked over 63 million users, becoming the fastest social media network ever to reach 50 million users, doing so in just nine months. It took Facebook just over 2 years to reach this mark and Instagram, just under (19 months). Another astonishing statistic after year one was that twitters net worth had skyrocketed to over $100 million.

    The first every retweet wasn't exactly a retweet at all, it was simply a copy and paste of someone else tweet with the word ReTweet in front of it followed by a semi-colon. This pushed twitter to create the retweet button and thus the retweet was born.

    What really made twitter famous as the use of the hashtag (#) which was started in August of 2007. Chris Messina, a google developer out of San Francisco was the first to use this in one of his tweets and has become the staple of twitter ever since, eventually extending to all social media platforms.

    As the app gained world wide popularity, especially among celebrities, people started making fake celebrity account and it was impossible to tell the real ones from the fake. It started with the St. Louis Cardinals manager after he sued Twitter in the summer of 2009 for impersonation on an article posted on the sight. Ever since then, anyone who wants to can apply to be twitter verified, and if you have enough followers / supporters, twitter will approve it.

    The replacement from the original star that was used to signify if someone liked your tweet, was changed to a heart in 2009, only 3 years after the birth of twitter.
  • Sliding in the DMs

    Sliding in the DMs
    Twitter integrated direct messaging into their already detailed social media platform in 2013 to even further extend the communication between users. Twitting DMs (direct messages) can be used to send individual messages to your followers, create group chats, and share tweets privately with friends.
  • Twitter's News Timeline

    Twitter's News Timeline
    The most recent update twitter has made along with its DM capabilities is the News Feed. This is a completely separate aspect of the app from your normal feed of people you follow. The aspect gives you hourly News Updates from around the world, keeping people knowledgable on current events without having to follow any News Sites or see spam retweets on your timeline

    Like fashion, social media is always adapting and changing its sight to keep its users coming back to the sight. Sights such as Facebook, Instagram, and yes, Twitter, will never stop changing and adapting to fit new trends and keep people coming back to the sight, & days a week, 365 days a year.
