The War of 1812 Starts
The United States declared war on Great Britian in 1812 to start the War of 1812. They declared war due to trade restrictions, annexation of British North America territory, etc. In the end, all causes of the war had disappeared with no geographic or policy changes. -
Treaty of Ghent is Signed
The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britian. The peace treaty was signed in Ghent by Prince Regent. The treaty itself only released all captured land and prisoners of either side, not fully ending the war however. -
Hudson's Bay Company Buys Rupert's Land
In 1821, the HBC bought Rupert's Land, named after Prince Rupert. The HBC bought it mainly due to how good of a trading spot the area would become. -
NWC and HBC Merge Together
On July 13th, 1821, the North West Company and the Hudson's Bay Company were forced to merge together by the British Government. This new merger let the Hudson's Bay Company keep their name and thus became the Hudson's Bay Company. Even though these 2 companies were merged, the NWC still owned 55 shares. -
The Durham Report
Lord Durham was sent to British North America in 1838. He was sent to investigate the cause of the Twin Rebellions of 1837. In 1839, he submitted a report to have a Responsible Government in Upper and Lower Canada. -
Upper Canada Becomes Canada West and Lower Canada Becomes Canada East
On February 10th, 1841, Upper Canada became Canada West and Lower Canada became Canada East. Both of these were established in order to make the Province of Canada. -
The Manifest Destiny
The Manifest Destiny was the beleif that the United States should one day own all of North America. In 1845, John L. O'Sullivan wrote about the Manifest Destiny in a paper and from there it gained popularity. -
Seigneurial System is Abolished
The Seigneurial System was abolished by the Legislative Assembly on December 18th 1854. Lord Elgin hoped that the abolishment of the Seigneurial System would create a Seigneurial Court. -
Fraser Canyon Gold Rush Begins
On May 23rd, 1855, gold was discovered in sandbars in the Fraser River and Thompson River. 10's of thousands of gold miners come from the United States and Canada to try and strike it rich. -
James Douglas Becomes Governor
James Douglas is elected Governor of the colony of British Columbia on November 19th, 1858. James Douglas worked for the North West Company and later switched to the Hudson's Bay Company. James Douglas is sometimes referred to as the Father of British Columbia. -
Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia Combine into One Colony
The Colony of Vancouver Island was created in 1849. The first Colony of British Columbia was created in 1858. Both colonies combined to form the Colony of British Columbia in 1866. -
British North America Act of 1867 is Passed
On March 8th, 1867, the British North America Act of 1867 is passed by the British Parliament. Renamed the Constitution Act of 1867, the British North America Act set some of the structure of the Canadian Government. This structure being taxes, house of commons, justice system, etc. -
John A. Macdonald is Elected
John A. Macdonald is elected as the first Prime Minister of Canada. John A. Macdonald was a Father of Confederation who beat out George Brown, another Father of Confederation in the election. John A. Macdonald lasted 19 years as Prime Minister of Canda, the second longest in history. -
Confederation Begins
On July 1st, 1867 Canada became a self governing country. John A. Macdonald was Prime Minister at that time, making Canada under rule of him. Most of this was thanks to the Constitution Act of 1867. -
The Canadian Parliament Aquires Rupert's Land
On March 20th, 1869, the Canadian Parliament bought Rupert's Land from the Hudson's Bay Company. The HBC almost sold Rupert's Land to the United States, but instead sold it to the Canadian Parliament thanks to some negotiation from Britian. -
The Red River Rebellion Begins
The Red River Rebellion started as the aftermath to the 1869 establishment of a Provisional Government. Louis Riel was the one who established the Provisonal Government. The Red River Rebellion later ended with Louis Riel fleeing to the United States. -
Manitoba and Northwest Territories Join Confederation
On July 15th, 1870, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories decide to join the Confederation. This comes after Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick have already joined it. -
British Columbia Joins Confederation
On July 20th, 1871, British Columbia decides to join the Confederation. This comes after Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories have already joined the Confederation. -
North West Mounted Police Formed
The NWMP was first called the North West Mounted Rifles, but John A. Macdonald changed it to North West Mounted Police in 1873. The main push factor for the forming of the NWMP was the Cypress Hill Massacre. 24 people dies in the Cypress Hill Massacre, making it a large importance to pul law in order. -
P.E.I. Joins Confederaton
Prince Edward Island joined the Confederation basically as a way to get out of its financial problems. In 1867, P.E.I. did not want to join the Confederation, but did end up joining in 1873. They did not join in 1867 because they preferred to be a part of Great Britian instead. -
Prince Edward Island Joins the Confederation
On July 1st, 1873, Prince Edward Island decides to join the Confederation. This comes after Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia already joined it. -
Canada Pacific Railway Begins Construction
John A. Macdonald put the idea of the CPR forward due to better join the Confederation of Canada. The building of the CPR started at Bonfield, Ontario on January 31st, 1881. On November 7th, 1885, the CPR was completed at Craigellachie, British Columbia. -
John A. Macdonald Dies
On June 6th, 1891, John A. Macdonald suffered a stroke in Ottawa at his home. John A. Macdonald was 76 when he died. He was buried next to his first wife, Isabella in Kingston. -
Yukon Territory Joins the Confederation
On June 13th, 1898, the Yukon Territory decides to join the Confederation. This come after Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island have already joined it. -
Saskatchewan and Alberta Join the Confederation
On September 1st, 1905, Saskatchewan and Alberta decide to join the confederation. This follows after Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island and Yukon Territory joined it.
