  • Thomas Jefferson elected President

    Thomas Jefferson elected as the third president of the United States.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Jefferson purchased 828,000 square miles of land from France for $15,000. This made America increase greatly in size.
  • War of 1812

    This war was fought because the Americans were tired of Britain controlling them even though they had already won their independence. It lasted until 1815.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Henry Clay proposed this compromise. It stated that Maine would enter the Union as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. It also established the dividing line for slavery for the Louisiana territory.
  • American System

    Also proposed by Henry Clay. The goal of this system was to make America become economically self-sufficient.
  • Trail of Tears

    This took place until 1838. Americans forced the Indians to move from their home to land in Oklahoma. Thousands of Indians had to move and many of them died on the way from illnesses and starvation.
  • Texas Rebellion

    Texas fought against Mexico for their independence and won their freedom in April of 1836.
  • Mexican-American War

    The war started over the annexation of Texas to America and where the Texas and Mexico borders stopped and started. The war lasted until 1848 when the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo was signed and America got the land being fought over and more.
  • Compromise of 1850

    This compromise stated that California enters the Union as a free state and the Mexican land from the war was divided into Utah and New Mexico. It made the Fugitive Slave Law and restricted slavery in Washington D.C. It attempted to bring the nation together, but caused more division instead.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act allowed both Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they wanted to join the Union as a free state or a slave state.
  • Civil War

    The Civil War was fought between the Northern States of America who wanted to abolish slavery and the Southern States who wanted to keep slavery. The conflict between the two sides had been building up and war eventually broke out. It ended on April 9th of 1865 after the South surrendered to the North at the Battle of Appomattox Court House.
  • Abraham Lincoln assassination

    Abraham became the 16th president of the United States on March 4,1861. He was shot and killed at the beginning of his second term on April 15, 1865.
