President James Madison signed a declaration of war against the United Kingdom, and the War of 1812 began. The war consisted of mainly naval battles between the United States and the United Kingdom. The first financial crisis of the United States led to the Panic of 1819. The country suffered from unemployment, foreclosures, and bank failures due to the massive amounts of debt from the War of 1812 and the tightening of credit form the Bank of the United States. -
Slavery Abolished in NY
New York was the first state to legally abolish slavery. They passed the Gradual Emancipation Act which freed slave children born after 1799 but indentured them until they were young adults. -
Joseph Smith Founds the Mormon Church
Joseph Smith organized the Mormon Church or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Fayette, NY. He published the Book of Mormon on March 26, 1830. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, VA, and killed 57 white citizens. Nat was later captured and hanged on November 11. -
The Revolution of Texas
The Revolution of Texas began with the battle of Gonzales when Mexican soldiers tried to disarm the people of Gonzales. Local militia resisted and by November, Texas proclaimed to secede from Mexico. Sm Houston took control of the Texas Army. -

The Civil War Begins
Fort Sumter was attacked by Confederate soldiers on April 12, 1861 and was captured on April 14. President Lincoln then called for 75,000 volunteers to fight the Confederate rebels and secessionists. 11 Southern states had seceded by May. -
The Emancipation Proclamation
President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which guaranteed all slaves that were helping the Union would be free as of January 1, 1863. -
The End of the Civil War
General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate forces to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, VA, thus ending the 4 year Civil War.
