  • Louisiana purchase

    This was a deal between the United States and France. Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana in 1803 from the French for $15 million. Napoleon offered to sell it for $15 million because France needed money for wars in Europe. This was importnat, because it gave the US control of the Mississippi River and New Orleans, both of which were used by farmers to ship their crops and get paid.
  • Missouri Compromise of 1820

    The United States were trying to keep the balance between slave and free states. In order to go with with this, they came up with the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The Compromise set Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state in order to maintain the balance.

    Trail of Tears

    The Trail of Tears was a part of Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Policy. All the Cherokees East of the Mississippi River were forced to move to a place in Oklahoma. This journey was known as the Trail of Tears, because over 16,000 Natives embarked on this adventure, and over 4,000 died due to disease and famine.

    Mexican American War

    This war was started, because of American citizen's hunger for more slave states in order to gain more political power. It ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which granted America a ton of land, and America payed Mexico $15 million.

    Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas occurred because of the Kansas-Nebraska act and being under the principle of popular sovereignty. Both pro-slavery and Antislavery people flooded into Kansas to affect the election. Violence broke out between these two groups which continued until the end of the Civil War.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act was passed by congress in 1854. It repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The Kansas Nebraska Act stated that Kansas and Nebraska could decide as states if they wanted to be slave states or free states. It eventually led to bleeding Kansas.
  • Lincoln elected

    In the year of 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected to presidency. This was important, because Lincoln was a very influential president who solved many problems in the country. Including putting an end to slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    This Proclamation was introduced by President Abraham Lincoln. It proclaimed that all slaves in the United States were granted freedom.
