This battle near the town of Sharpsburg was the first major battle of the Civil War to be fought on Union soil. It was also the bloodiest single day in American history, as over twenty thousand soldiers were either killed, wounded, or missing. -

The Emancipation Proclamation was a document written by Abraham Lincoln which declared all of the slaves free. -
Abraham Lincoln is Shot
While watching the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater, Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln died the next morning.
