    The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of French Territory by the United States. The new territory doubled the size of the U.S. The Purchase was signed in Paris, France, by James Monroe.

    The Embargo Act was a nonviolent protest conducted by President Thomas Jefferson, as he prohibited American Ships from forgein trade. Jefferson’s intentions were to punish Britain and France for interfering with American trade and to prevent a war between the U.S. and Britain.

    The war of 1812 was due to British Attempts to restrict U.S. trade, and America's desire to expand their territory. Although America had lost so much because of the war, with the ratification of the Treaty of Ghent, the U.S. celebrated the war as the beginning of an era of partisan agreement and national pride.

    The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812. It brought peace between the U.S. and the British. The war of 1812 was disastrous for both the U.S. and Britain, therefore, the Treaty of Ghent was particularly designed to end the conflict and fighting between the two powers.

    The Battle of New Orleans was a victory for the United States. The Victory became a symbol of American Democracy as the American forces triumphed over British forces.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    From President James Monroe to the Congress, the Monroe Doctrine warned European Powers not to interfere with the Western Hemisphere. Monroe had 4 major points (1) the U.S. would not interfere with European affairs, (2) the U.S. recognizes and would not interfere with existing colonies, (3) the Western Hemisphere was closed to future colonization, and (4) if a European power tried to interfere with any nation in the Americas, that would be viewed as a hostile act against the U.S.

    After the Louisiana Purchase and during the rage of the Gold Rush, Americans would travel a 2,000 mile route from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon City, Oregon. It was the Manifest Destiny that encouraged many to travel the hard and arduous path.

    In 1848, the first gold nuggets were found in Sacramento Valley. This sparked a boom in gold mining. By the end of it, about $2 worth of gold was extracted from California Territory.

    In 1850, Congress passed a law– also part of the 1850 compromise– requiring that all slaves be returned to their owners even if they were in a free state. This also allowed for the federal government to find, return, and try free slaves.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    In the summer of 1863, the Union, led by George G. Meade, won the 3 day long battle of Gettysburg against the confederates, led by Robert E. Lee. The Battle of Gettysburg is known as the turning point of the civil war, as it ended Lee’s ambition to invade the north. The Battle of Gettysburg eventually led to the Confederate States to become independent.
