17.2 Timeline

  • Chinese Civil War

    This was a civil war in China fought between forces loyal to the government of the Republic of China led by the Kuomintang and forces of the Communist Party of China. This war represents the split between the Communism and the Nationalism in China.
  • Berlin Blockade

    This was on of the first major international crisis of the Cold War. The Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canals to the places in Berlin under allied control.
  • Berlin Airlift

    In response to the Berlin Blockade the Western Allies organized the Berlin airlift to take supplies to the people in West Berlin who had no other means of acquiring supplies.
  • Formation of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)

    NATO was formed to to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. They were making threats against many countries and NATO was formed to stop them from succeding.
  • National Security Council Report NSC-68

    This was a 58-page top secret policy paper issued by the United States National Security Council on April 14, 1950. it was also most significant statements of American policy during the Cold War.
  • Korean War

    Was a war between the Republic of Korea (South Korea), supported by the United Nations. Mainly the result of the political division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the end of WWII.
  • President Truman's relief of General Douglas MacArthur

    U.S. President Harry S. Truman relieved General of the Army Douglas MacArthur of his commands for making public statements that contradicted the administration's policies. MacArthur was a popular hero of World War II. Commander of United Nations forces fighting in the Korean War.
  • Formation of the Warsaw Pact

    The political and military alliance of the Soviet Union and East European socialist states, known as the Warsaw Pact, was formed in 1955 as a counterweight to NATO. The Soviet Union sign a treaty establishing the Warsaw Pact, a mutual defense organization with several other Europena nations that put the Soviets in command of the armed forces of the member states.
