1607- Jamestown is founded
Jamestown became the first permanent English Settlement in North America. This establishment was the beginning of the colonization in America by the British. -
1608- Quebec
Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec giving France a chance to enter the New World He established a fort at Cape Diamond. This became the first major settlement in France, having control over New France leading them to complete control over the Louisiana Territory in America. -
1609- Henry Hudson
Two years after European colonists established the colony Jamestown in Virginia, The Dutch East India Company hired an English sailor, Henry Hudson to explore for a Northeast passage to India. He founded the Hudson River and claimed modern day New York for the Dutch. -
1619- Slaves
20-30 enslaved African Americans landed at Point Comfort, today's Fort Monroe in Hampton. These Africans were traded in exchange for supplies and goods. A couple day later, a second ship arrived in Virginia with slaves, leading to the first recorded Africans to arrive on Englands colonies. This year marks the beginning of race- based bondage that would later define African American experience. -
1629- Massachusetts Bay Colony
In 1630, John Winthrop founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Puritans intended to set up a society that would accord to what they believed God called them to do.This was a charter colony, allowing self government. It became the most successful and profitable colony in New England. -
1664- New Amsterdam
New Amsterdam was taken control by the English and renamed New York. The Dutch and the English would live together at peace. New York would soon be very important and one of the most successful States in the United States. -
1676-1677- Bacon's Rebellion
The Bacons Rebellion was started due to Native American lands being denied and fighting against the Colonial governor William Berkley. Nathaniel Bacon and his military captured Jamestown, and burned it to the ground. This is thought as the first armed war by American colonists against Britain and their colonial government. -
1678- King Philips War Ended
The King Philip War also know as the First Indian War, took place in Southern New England. The English settlers, captured and killed many enslaved Native Americans. The settlers destroyed and burned all of their land and properties, including their homes. This war was strictly between the English and the Natives. Now that the English destroyed the Native Americans, it allowed them to easily come in and take control them. -
1685- Catholicism
James II the King of England, he succeeded to the throne of Britain and introduces pro- Catholic polices. He granted religious minorities the freedom to worship.
