1600-1700

  • Jamestown Established

    Jamestown was one of the first cities established. They started out as a failure but became a big money maker with the popular crop tobacco.
  • Sir Edwin Sandys becomes an important member of Parliament.

    Sir Edwin Sandys created a new headright/land grant were anyone who bought a share of the Virginia Company could get a free 50 acres when they arrived in America.
  • The First African Slaves Arrived to America

    In 1619 the ship the White Lion arrived in America and it contained 20 enslaved Africans. These were the first African slaves to come to America.
  • The Creation of Plymouth.

    In 1620 a group of people came to the Americas and landed on a rock. They named it Plymouth Rock and created a settlement nearby.
  • Plymouth Learns to Grow Important Crops

    The Plymouth Colony had struggled through the winters and lost many of the colonists, luckily a local Native American nearby named Squanto taught the colonists how to grow corn, catch fish, gather nuts and berries, and communicate and negotiate with the Wampanoags Tribe.
  • Virginia Company goes Bankrupt

    In 1624 the Virginia Company declared bankruptcy. Virginia then transitioned to a royal colony which was controlled by the government.
  • Maryland Becomes a State

    In 1634 Maryland became a royal colony as well. This colony was named after Henrietta Maria, she was the Catholic wife of King Charles I.
  • King Charles I Execution

    King Charles was executed in 1649 when Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans took control of England. They executed him because he had committed treason.
  • Toleration Act Revoked

    In 1649 the Toleration Act came into play. It welcomed all Christians no matter what domination they were a part of, but it also promised that anyone who didn't believe in Jesus being the true King to be executed. Later in 1654, this act was taken away and instead, they stripped away the Catholic voting rights and denied them any right to worship.
  • New Hampshire Becomes a Colony

    In 1679 New Hampshire became a Royal Colony. Its main resource was its great fishing.
