The Missouri Compromise did not allow slavery above the 36 30 line. This caused sectionalism between the north and south. -
War with Mexico
The war was caused by "manifest destiny". Which is the thought that God wanted the US to expand. It was ended with the Treaty of Gauadalupe Hidalgo which gave the US a large area of land in the southwest for 15 million dollars. -
Wilmot's Proviso
This document was going to ban slavery in all the new territory gained from the Mexican War. This caused stress between the north and the south over the question of slavery -
Fugitive Slave Act
The Northand free slaves were againts this law because you could get thrown in jail for not turning over a run away slave. The free slaves did not like it because they were accused of being slaves. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This law repealed the Missourri compromise because it allowed the people of the states to decide if they would have slavery. These two states were above the 36 30 line. -
Bleeding Kansas
Pro-slavery and anti-slavery people were fighting each other trying to make it either a slave or free state. -
Republican Party
Northerners created the Republican Party in protest to the fighting in Kansas. They wanted to restrict slavery and keep it were it was and not let it expand -
Breakdown of the two party system
With the creation of the Republican party the nation's two party system failed. The Republicans were in the north while the Democrates were in the south. This allowed them to have radical ideas. -

Congressman Brooks from South Carolina beat Snator Sumber with a cane because Sumner insulted Brooks during a speech. People in the south worshiped Brooks for what he did. -
Dred Scott
During the trial of Dred Scott the Supreme Court declared that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional. The Republicans were angry and decided to get new judges. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's becomes a best seller. This book describes the life and treatment of slaves. The north was shocked at how poorly the slaves were being treated while the south was mad that it cast a bad shadow on slavery. -
House Divided cannot stand
This speach given by Abraham Lincoln said that if the country was not united then it would fail. The main issue dividing the country was slavery -
John Brown
John Brown thought that God had sent him to rid the earth of slavery so he tried to start a slave revolt at Harper's Ferrry. The revolt was a failure. -
1860 Election
Lincoln was elected beating John Breckinridge. South saw this a threat to there way of life so they knew that they would have to revolt -
Crittenden Compromise
Last attempt to have a peaceful settlement bettween the north and the south. The 36 30 line would stretch all the way to the pacific. South excepted this while the north did not becuase it expanded slavery. -
Fort Sumter
Seven states from the south seceded. They attacked the the union fort Sumter to keep it from being resupplied.
