    Gold from South African mines got transfered into London. It was used by rich industrialists to invest in developing British territories such as Canada. In B.C. mining, lumber, and fishing companies became very useful for money on the west coast.

    Immigration issues (Chinese, Komagata Maru)
    Because of all the immigration "Push-Pull" factors were created. Each immigrant was required to pay a $50 head tax. The amount of immigrants aloud on ship to be transported over at a time was limited. Only one person per 50 tonnes.

    Phrase used to market the Canadian Prairies. Doing this advertising, made a large amount of immigrants from mexico and southern united states, that nine years later, Saskatchewan and Alberta were formed as provinces.

    Wilfred Laurier
    Was Canads first francophone prime minister. Is well known for expanding confederation, and siding with the french. Stayed Prime Minister the fourth longest. Is on the current Canadian five dollar bill.

    The second part of the Boer war was the longest part. It was a major event in British history, because of the anti-insurgency tactics the army used in the region. 40% of the men called up for battle were physically unfit to fight. British rounded up Boer villages and turned them into concentration camps.

    During the laurier era, women's suffrage happend(the right to vote). The main group of suffragists were middle-class women devoted to social reform. beore this in 1873 only women who owned land could vote. By 1912 women were aloud to vote.

    After the railway was done chinese couldn't afford to go back to china so they stayed in Victoria and Vancouver. Chinese immigrants did most of the heavy manual work that other civilians didn't want to do. The government leagalized discrimination against the chinese.

    Once the land was obtained by Canadians they needed to raise about $500 to buy items. These were a plough, a wagon, horses, and a milk cow. Houses were made of mud-covered sod on a wood frame.

    The railway was extended through the Yellowhead Pass and down the North Thompson River to Kamloops, and then on to Vancouver. The railway became less profitable then expected because of World war 1 making immigration slower.

    Was a dispute between Canada, and the U.S. This area was important because of the Gold rush at the time. Thedispute has been going on since 1821 between Russia and British empires. THe dispute was mainly started over the United states, wanting the boundary because they bought Alaska.

    Saskatchewan became a province when it grew from settlers coming over to the prairies, by using the CPR. The Inauguration day was held 3 days after it became a province on September 4th.

    Before Alberta was made its own province in Canada, it was created as part of the North West Territories in 1882. After along campaign for autonomy, Alberta's boundaries was widened enough to have its own provincial status. Alexander Cameron Rutherford became the first premier.

    The dominion act was created to make immigration to the prairies more appealing. The act gave 160 acres for free. The farmer had to stay there for three years. Less then half of the west lands were owned by farmers.

    Vancouver's Asiatic Exclusion League (AEL) protested against continued immigration from China, Japan, and Korea. (AEL) was backed by a non-union conservative labour organization.

    British were known for there ships, and wanted to have the most powerful navy. For this to happen, they wanted help from Canada to pay for the construction of a new class, called dreadnoughts. Laurier built a navy to be used for canadas protection, but when britain needed the help, Laurier would send the navy over to help.

    Some main unions were Imperial Oil, Massey-Harris, and Dunsmuir Coal. Many Entrepreneurs were becoming rich and building large mansions, such as Casa Loma, in Toronto, and the Dunsmuir Craighdarroch Castle, in victoria. 10% of workers were part of unions.
  • Robert Borden

    Robert Borden
    Was the prime minister during world war 1. Because of this he transformed his government into a wartime administration. He passed the War Measures Act in 1914. In 1917 he also made the Military Service act and the Conscription Crisis of 1917.
  • Nisga'a Land Claim

    Nisga'a Land Claim
    A native indian tribe was getting mad about white settlement on their lands. A chief wanted honour aboriginal title to the land, give the Nisga'a larger reserves on which to live, and compensate the Nisga'a for any land they surrendered. This land claim went on for 90 years and didn't finish untill August 4, 1998.
