Catholic kingdoms in Spain had reconquered Muslim areas there and expelled Spanish Jew. Muslin where forced to convert or go into exile. Spain saw itself as a nation that was "chosen by God save Catholic Christianity from Protestant heretics. -

Queen Elizabeth took throne
Elizabeth Tudor ascended the english throne in 1558. During her reign the small island kingdom became the leader of the protestant nations of Eurpoe and laid the foundations for a world empire.She was intelligent, careful, and self confident.ELizabeth repealed the laws favoring the catholics. -

Armada
IN 1588, Phillip 2 made prepations to send an armada- a fleet of warships -- to invade england. A successful invasion of Englsnd would mean the overflow of Protestantism. The hoped for victory never came. The armada was battered by the faster english ships and sailed back ot spain. -
petition of right
in 1628 parliaments passed a petition of right. The petition placed liits on the king's abilty to tax, imprison citezens without cause, quarter troops, and institute martial law. -
Civil war in england
Complaints grew until england slipped into a civil war in 1642 between the supporters of the king (cavaliers) and the parliamerntary (roundheads). -

James 2
james 2 became king in 1685. James was open and a devout Catholic. He named catholics to high positions in government, army, navy, and universities. Religion became a conflict again -
WIlliam invade England
Williams forces landed at Torbay and began their march toward london. James sent his army. James retreated to london with his wife and son. -
toleration act
this was another important action of the parliament. The toleration act granted puritans but not catholics the right of free public worship. -

john locke argued against the absolute rule of one person. Lockee believed that before society was organized, humans lived in a state of equality and freedom rather than in a state of war. -
sun king dies
the sun king dies at age 76. He left france surrounded by enemies and left many of the french people in poverty. -
peter the great
peter becomes king in 1689 and dies in 1725. His dynasty lasted till 1917. He went westward to make his dynasty more modern. Upper class women didnt have to wear veils and men had to shave their beards. Peter the great wanted slaves but also wanted the mto be free.
