During the cold war we were worried about what the Russian's were doing so we would send U2 airplanes over to spy on them. We denied ever spying on them but when they finally shot down our spy plane we were caught red handed. -
The Summer Olympic Games
The Summer Olympic Games were held in Rome and The Winter Games were held in Squaw Valley, California. We did not do to well in either but it was still a great honor to have them in the United States of America. -
First Televised Debate
On this day more than 77 million Americans tuned in to watch Kennedy and Nixon exchange their thoughts on television for the first time. JFK came off as young and athletic and Nixon came off ass old and gray. Which gave JFK a big edge. -
JFK Elected President
John F. Kennedy becomes the youngest man ever to be elected to be the president of the United states of America. He was asloo the first Catholic to ever be elected as president. This campaign was historical because it was the first time candidates ever debated over television. -
John Glenn
John H. Glenn, Jr. launched from Cape Canaveral and made America's first orbital flight, piloting the Mercury-Atlas 6 Friendship 7 spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the United States. -
"I Have a Dream"
Martin Luther King Jr. gave his infamous speach intitled "I Have a Dream". He gave this speak to over 200,000 who all came to the captital to demand equal rights for Blacks and Whites. -
JFK Shot
John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas at 12:30 p.m. He was shot while riding with his wife in the Presidential motorcade. After a 10 month investigation they concluded that he was assasinated by Lee Harrvey Oswald. -

The Beatles perform on the American Ed Sullilvan show. This performance was viewed and instantly loved by an estimated seventy three million people! America loves ever sense that. -
The Civil Rights Act
This was the first civil rights bill to stop racial segregation in the Untied States. It outlawed segregation in schools, public places, and employment. At first it was just to help Blacks, but then it was amended to help women too. -
Martin Luther King Jr. wins Nobel Peace Prize
Martin Luther King Jr. made history on this day in 1964 by being the youngest man to win the Nobel Peace Prize. At the age of 35 he was awared this amazing award for his resistance against racial prejudice in America. -
Martin Luther King Jr. Shot
Martin Luther King Jr. had been standing on his balcony of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN when he was deliberately shot by James Earl Ray. He worked so hard to try to prevent violence and racism and in the end was killed by it. -
Shirley Chisholm in Congress
Shirley Chisholm was America's first black woman to Congress. She ran against James Farmer and won. She quickly became know for her work on minorities and peace issues. -
Nixon Elected
Richard Nixon was the 37th president of th United States of America. He won one of the clostest elections in U.S. history. He defeated Vice President Hubrt Humphrey only because of the third party candidate George Wallace. Neither Nixon or Humphery got more than 50 % of the popular vote. -
First Step on the Moon
Neil Armstrong was the first man to ever wass on the moon's surface.While putting his leftt foot down on the moon's surface Armstrong declared, "That's on small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." He said the surface was like powderd charcoal and the landing craft left a crater about a foot deep in the powder. -

Woodstock was a music festival in Bethel, New York in Sullivan Country. It had Thirty- Two of the best well known bands of that day and today.
