Roanoke Island
Queen Elizabeth allowed Walter Raleigh to send 100 men to Roanoke Island. This became one of the Southern Colonies. -
Lost Colony
John White found all the men at the fort were killed. He wanted to find his wife and family but a hurricane drove him away. -
Jamestown
A group of over 100 men landed on the banks of the James River where the water was not healthy to drink. Their leader, John Smith, ordered them to build a fort. The harsh winter pounded their settlement harshly, and only 60 men survived. -
The Starving Time
Captain John Smith returns to England, Pocahontas stops visiting the settlement, and the colony to starve. -
A New Government
The first elected assembly was established called the House of Burgesses. -
Plymouth
The Mayflower lands at Plymouth Rock, here the Pilgrims make a colony. -
The First Feast
The governor, William Bradford, held a feast of celebration with the pilgrims and Native Americans. -
The Land Grant
Sir George Calvert convinces King Charles 1 to grant him land in North America. -
Act of Toleration
Lord Baltimore asks the assembly to pass an Act of Toleration. This allows the colonists to practice their religion freely. -
Pennsylvania
King Charles 2 gives William Penn land in the New World to repay a dept to his dead father.
