1607 The first colony was founded Jamestown, Virginia.
On May 14 ,1607, A group of about a hundred people called the virginia company, founded Jamestown the first permant english setlment in the new world. Jamestown nearly colapesed in its first two years due to famine, disease, and conflicts with local tribes. But the town was saved when a new group setlers came with suplies (1610) -
1618 Headright system established
This law gave about 50 acres of land to colonists who paid their own way to Virginia, North Carolinia, South Carolinia, or other british Colonies. This law would also give you about 50 acers of land if someone else paid your way. But most workers who arived in virgina became indentured servants. -
House of Burgesses
The first legislature in the English colonies in America was in Virginia. This was the House of Burgesses, and its first meting on July 30, 1619, at a church in Jamestown. Its first order of business was to set a minimum price for the sale of tobacco. -
Mayflower compact founded
The Mayflower Compact, signed by 41 English colonists on the ship Mayflower on November 11, 1620, was the first written framework of government established in what is now the United States. The compact was drafted to prevent dissent amongst Puritans and non-separatist Pilgrims who had landed at Plymouth a few days earlier. -
Great migration bigins
Mass migration of thousands of English people to the Americas that took place between 1630 and 1640. This migration bugun because in the new world there was religios freedom, and because of the headwright system. (alowing people that paid to go to the new would get land) -
New Netherland renamed New York
The english have had 3 wars against the netherlands, and they were thier main comercial rival. And when the english came up to the coast of new england with four warships packed with men, they gave up the land without a fight. -
The Salem witch trials begin
The infamous Salem witch trials began during the spring of 1692, after a group of girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed and accused several local women of witchcraft. As a wave of hysteria spread throughout Massachusetts, a special court convened in Salem to hear the cases; the first convicted witch, Bridget Bishop, was hanged that June. Eighteen others followed Bishop to Salem’s Gallows Hill, while some 150 more men, women and children were accused over the next months. -
The stamp act
The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765. This act caused the colonist to pay tax on every peice of printed paper used, from leagal documents, to playing cards. This act outraged the colonist, because it was not aproved by colonial legislature. -
Revolution begins
700 british troops were marching to capture a patriot arsenal. and when they got there, an unidentified gun fired "the shot heard around the world" they begun the short batle of lexington. And while it was a short battle, it was the battle that begun the revolutinary war -
Decleration of Independence
This was a document declaring that america was now taking their place as a seprate part of the world. This historic event is why we celebrate the fourth of july celebrating our freedom.
