Roanoke
Roanoke was known as the Lost Colony. This is where the message carved on a tree "CROATOAN" was found. Sir Walter Raleigh founded the colony in 1585. By 1590, the colony had no one there and vanished after John White returned from England. The colony was the first try for England in settling in the new world, but they failed.

Jamestown
This colony got off to a rough start because 38 of 150 settlers survived the first winter. The settlement was on a swamp and some men had refused to work. The winter was really bad. Native Americans were not friendly. Since John Rolfe and Pocahontas were married, the 2 sides remained friendly. However, tobacco made Jamestown boom because it was the biggest crop they had.

House of Burgesses
This was the first governing body in the British overseas possession. This included a governor and council. The legislature was established by governor George Yeardley in July of 1619. Virginia's settlement included 2 delegates. They had the system of laws, which could get vetoed and revised.

Great Migration
Many families migrated into New England in 1620. The journey was 3000 miles over the ocean for the search of religious freedom. The amount of people that came over was 20,000. The population during the great migration skyrocketed from 4,000 people to 50,000 people in 20 years. Many people were looking to practice and do their own religion.

Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower was a ship that set sail in 1620. The oceans were dangerous so the Mayflower was damaged a few times in storms. It took 66 days for the first voyage to make it to the colonies in Cape Cod. The Mayflower compact was an instrument that put Pilgrims together. The contract was to civilize people and get permission from the England colonies to settle. Plymouth was discovered and named by John Smith.

New York
New York was one of the 13 colonies and was a middle colony. It was founded in 1626. Their religion was mainly free of choice. New York was governed by a Royal colony. New York was big with trade and exports so they made a lot of profit. The territory was also called New Netherlands but was then named Duke of York.

Massachusetts Bay Colony
This colony was a New England colony. It was settled by 1,000 refugees from England. It was settled in 1630 and was under the control of John Winthrop. The refugees wanted to flee England so they could create a church that was free from Royal control. The colony received a charter from King Charles to trade and colonize in New England.

Maryland Colony
Maryland was a part of the Southern colonies. The colony was founded by George Calvert and many more in Baltimore in 1634. Maryland was big in agriculture and manufacturing. Colonists lived here without the fear of being persecuted for their faith, they were Catholics. At that time Christians were being persecuted. Tobacco was very profitable for Maryland and it helped them flourish.

Maryland Toleration Act
Its founding in 1634 Maryland allowed a greater than usual amount of freedom for both Catholics and Protestants. This gave religious freedom to people that were in the past persecuted. Now, in Maryland they could worship any religion. However, people that still judged and made fun of the religions were sometimes given the death penalty. Even fines were given out to people. Rhode Island
Rhode island was a New England colony. Roger Williams and his people settled in the colony in 1635. Roger Williams was banished from the Massachusetts colony because of his beliefs on free religion and separation. He brought the group to Rhode island where they had no religious persecution. Connecticut
Connecticut was a New England colony. Was founded by Thomas Hooker in 1636. The colony was mainly used for agriculture. The land however was rocky soil and many lowlands. This colony was usually cold and the summers were short. No religious freedom was allowed in Connecticut.

Carolina
The Carolinas were a part of the Southern colonies. The Carolina colony was based on agriculture. The coast of the Carolinas was one of the first sights of English attempts of settling. In 1669, there was a fundamental constitution set up to make counties in the Carolinas. These were acres for labor of men and women. The geography of the Carolinas was shaped for agriculture, but had many flooded lowlands.

Bacons rebellion
Bacon had a personal problem with Barkley. Bacon then destroyed and attacked Jamestown. The rebellion was very short lived though. The rebellion ended because of bacon's death of dysentery. It was significant because it was the first colonial rebellion against royal control.

Pennsylvania
This was a part of the Middle colonies. It was founded by a man named William Penn in 1682. Pennsylvania was on good terms with Native Americans and that was good. This colony was big on manufacturing. They exported many of their products. Also, they had major agriculture that included livestock, wheat, corn, and dairy. Lastly, the colony was based on religious beliefs and was called Province of Pennsylvania.

Salem Witch Trials
Young girls in 1692 began to explain that they were possessed by demons. 150 people were put into prison for witchcraft. As time went on more people were accused and some people even died as a result after trials. 1 person as crushed to death for refusing to testify and many people were hung because they were found guilty. Great Awakening/Enlightment
Enlightment inspired new ways of thinking and technology/literature. It changed the role of religion and divine right in colonial America. In the mid 1700s, the colonies saw many spiritual and religious revivals. This was known as the Great Awakening. Evangelists thought as slavery as sin. the movement was made of religious purpose and understanding Christian faith and way of life. French-Indian War
This war was fought between France and Britain. The battle was from 1754 to 1763. The issue that caused the war was the land boundary on the Ohio River. Britain had many more advances than the French so they had the upper hand. They also blocked off food import routes to the French so they had a greater surplus of food. In the end, Great Britain won. France and Britain agreed to the Treaty of Paris that was a peace sign from France.

Albany Plan
Most colonists lacked a sense of union so they followed the British rules. A group in 1754, formed the Albany Plan of Union. The Americans were in a struggle with the French-Indian War. They were fighting over the land of North America. Since there were these issues the British people formed this union.

Proclamation of 1763
This proclamation shut down colonial expansion westward. The goal was to establish the lands after the war between the French-Indians and British. Many of the Indian tribes lost there land and went to the Caribbean. This proclamation helped establish boundaries also. It divided Britain settlers and Indians. Salutary Neglect
This was a policy of the British government that made trade regulations enforced. The policy produced a lot of profit for the British government. The salutary neglect led to the American independence. During this time, governors were given more power and authority. This was in effect and was not totally strict if the colonies were loyal to British rule.
