    Adams became the second President of the United States of America as a conservative Federalist. Major events during the John Adams administration include the XYZ Affair (1797) with the French, the Alien and Sedition Acts(1798) against immigrants and US citizens, and the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions (1798) which argued for states' rights and nullification.

    Thomas Jefferson is elected President
    Events during the Jefferson adminstration include the Louisianna Purchase from France, excise taxes on commodities such as whiskey are repealed, the ratification of the 12th Amendment which provides the procedure for electing the President and Vice President, and the passing of the Embargo Act that restricted American ships from engaging in foreign trade.

    It was a military conflict fought between the US and the British Empire. The US desired expansion into the Northwest Territory, trade restrictions, was angered by impressment of Amerisan merchant sailors, and they was angered by the support of the British for the American Indians.

During this period all white males were allowed to vote, allowing the common man more say in government. It also ushered in the use of the spoils system, increased the executive branch's power, included the Indian Removal Act, and laissez-faire economics.

The Confederates from the South wanted the continuation of slavery, while the Northerners opposed the ownership of people and the economic boost the South gained from slavery. Abolitionists of slavery all together, deeming criminal. The Emancipation Proclamation did not declare freedom to all slaves.

    This compromise ended Reconstruction of the South, with the removal of all Federal troops from the former Confederate States. It called for the appointment of at least one Southern Democrat to Hayes's cabinet, the construction of another transcontinental railroad, and legislation to help industrialize the South.

    It was a conflict between the US and Spain. It ultimately ended with the Americans defeating the Spaniards. It erupted with the explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. The US gained Cuba, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

    WWI officially began on July 28, 1914 and ended November 11, 1918. The main causes of the war were militarism, alliance system, imperialism, and nationalism. The war was between two groups, the Allies and the Central Powers. The war erupted when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated while visiting Serbia. At first the US opted to stay neutral but with the brutal displays of the German's abuse and the use of German U-boats that torpedoed 3 American ships led Congress to declare war.
